"Can we talk about who is top and who is bottom?" "The white one looks like a top." I'm dying! That is like the first scene where you saw them together. 😂 I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it in later comments, but you got that right: WangJi really is the top in the novel.

The guy who brought back Wei Wuxian (the lead) killed himself (hence all the blood and the ghostly man talking to Wei Wuxian at the beginning) and sacrificed his body to summon (ie. save from death) Wei Wuxian to get revenge on his relatives after years of abuse. The dead man wore a mask all his life, so they never saw his face and so didn't know that he had changed into Wei Wuxian. The family died by the ghosts and so the scars went away, even though Wei Wuxian himself didn't kill them. He does have some power over spirits, so he released the two men who were possessed to fight the woman in order to protect the others. That's why they fought her.
