Andor was exactly what I wanted from Star Wars but there probably is a limited ceiling for this kind of thing. We're probably gonna keep getting more Filoni-flavored things, which I think has kind of run its course. Acolyte at least could make the Jedi feel fresher and expand the overall world.

I think showing the hero characters as morally ambiguous is interesting when you show how society morally rots outside the established power structure (The Empire), for example locally. The law enforcement guy still tries to uphold morals and laws, but seems to know that his efforts are futile. The other law enforcement guy only seeks self-fulmilment in his career and doesn't mind doing immoral and unlawful actions when it serves him. An Emperor Palpatine type of man wouldn't be that successful if it wasn't for people at a local level helping his cause.
But I also think when you show the liberation of a whole galaxy from the tyranny of one man, then moral ambiguity in hero characters is only interesting when you see how they turn... ...from selfish to selfless (Han Solo) or complying with the tyrant until they reach a point where they can't comply anymore and out of necessity turn against the tyrant (Lando Calrissian).
I'd find it interesting to see a story where Galen Erso turns from some well-meaning engineer to an embittered enemy of the Empire. His main value is identical with Palpatine's supposed main value (peace and justice in the galaxy) until he fully realizes that he's the main enabler of war and injustice in the galaxy. He is not able to halt the construction of the Death Star, nor is he able to engineer something like a self-destruct mechanism. But he is able to get the Death Star plans out of the facility into the hands of the rebels. And that is the last deed he does before he dies.

I hear ya, but once I hit like 22 I just became a "relax and enjoy the dimming lights until there isn't enough energy left to run the devices that allow you to enjoy all the physical media you've saved up over the last fifteen years because you saw the digitization of media coming from a mile away" kind of guy (which is why I own over 700 DVDs/blurays, 500 CDs, and a ton of books). I just want to either relax or spend time with friends and family. In the end, whatever happens happens, and I can't change it. I'm just going to enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts.
And hey! You never know. Things might somehow get fixed. I'm sure our grandparents thought the world was ending during fucking WWII. And our parents during and in the years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. We still live in an age of unparalleled prosperity, living standards, and lack of war. Maybe science figures it out. Maybe this; maybe that. You never know what the future holds. Can't be all doom and gloom! Just take it one day at a time, hope for the best, and don't get too down if you end up disappointed.

Haha thanks buddy. I don't really care about the greenhouse gases produced by animal agriculture because, again, it's a drop in the bucket. We could eliminate that and cars throughout the First World tomorrow and it still wouldn't do much. The vast majority of the world will continue to rely on fossil fuels, we will continue to rely on fossil fuels for energy, and no real progress will be made until people stop being scared of the word "nuclear" and embrace nuclear power. Of course, it's almost certainly too late already and, if it ever happens, it will definitely be too late by then! Enjoy the world while it lasts :D

Another thing that I liked about Andor is that they avoided using any of the well known aliens we usually expect from Star Wars. There are no Wookies, no Twi'leks, no Rodians. The aliens they do show us are either very obscure, or new to the setting entirely. An interesting detail about the show that you guys didn't mention in the video.

Let me start by saying that I haven't seen this show (or any Star Wars product since The Farts Awakened Me in the Theater (I literally fell asleep). But the kind of arc you're describing for this Syril guy is exactly the kind of arc I like seeing, as it's far more complex than "guy realizes he must take the pursuit of justice into his own hands because everyone else is corrupt" or whatever. Going from trying to do the right thing --> joining an organization (and ideology) that tells you it's committed to that --> disillusionment with that organization/ideology --> acceptance (I realize I've left out some important steps for..ahem...brevity) is far more interesting and, more importantly, rare in character arcs.
I appreciate an arc like this far more than the one you see coming, where the guy realizes he's the only one who can bring change and/or rebel. Instead, he finally accepts his world, out of a sense of the whole world being full of liars, manipulators, and people who just don't care and/or are pursuing their own incompatible goals. He has no real power, he's just one man, he needs a job, and he slowly accepts his place in this world and the life he'll live.
We all want heroes who cannot help but battle injustice and do the right thing, but we all make these compromises every day. We all do things we know are wrong or don't do things we know would be right. Do I still drive a gas-guzzling car because I absolutely adore it, have owned it since 2012, and can't find another that I like nearly as much? Yup (although I'll buy an electric car when we embrace nuclear energy. Until then, you can replace every car in the First World with an electric one and it won't make the slightest difference). But am I also a vegetarian because I can't stand the idea of eating animals that are inhumanely raised and/or slaughtered and/or have too high a degree of emotion and intelligence? Also yes. We all make good and bad choices every day, out of convenience, comfort, or the constraints of society. And, to be clear, I don't judge anyone for eating meat, as literally everyone I know does. It's one of the things that I personally chose to do right, among the many I've chosen to do wrong. And not everyone even agrees that it's right, and that's OK!
I could write so much more about why this is vastly more interesting than the "I've finally realized what's good" arc -- especially in a show that's supposed to be dark and gritty -- like talking about how socioeconomic status and external expectations can lead people into accepting these situations, but I'm pretty sure this is the longest comment ever left on a Patreon post. And I'm sure nobody is reading at this point, and rightfully so! I'm just some rando on the internet who hasn't even watched the show!
IOW: You do a Re:View of this before DS9? I just got an encrypted subspace communication from Krebs and he is FURIOUS. And no, I am not going to stop asking for a DS9 Re:View until it either happens or you guys tell me it's just not something you're interest in. Krebs for life!

I agree it does show where Syril Karn came from essentially. He clearly had a very different upbringing than Andor. He had a status-driven over-bearing mother and his social status/family connections resulted in him being a brain-washed member of the imperial society. No real personality of his own. Just a stooge toeing the line of the Empire/Morlana Corp. Etc. I agree with all that. I think I just struggle with the drama angle. If the show was about, say, Andor and Karn as friends growing up and going separate ways then the show is about how the outside world can affect people’s choices in life etc etc… then that’s what it’s about. It seems to more focus on the how’s and why’s people rebel against authoritarianism. If Syril Karn is going to just be a more badder bad guy then why take so much time on him? Sure, we get a sense of how he came to be what he currently is, but at the end he’s clearly unhinged and something sure’s gonna happen. To what end dramatically does that lead to? Is his journey just to get back into the good graces of the Empire and work again to capture criminals? Seems sort of a dead end if he doesn’t have a larger arc.

originally they wanted 5 seasons, but ended up doing 4 seasons in one as 3 episodes each in s2. it’s already finished filming.
the showrunner says it was his own decision to cut it down, but kathleen kennedy famously hated the first season, so I wonder if it was not actually her idea to half-cancel it, and the showrunner is just trying to save face for her. I would not be surprised. but maybe she’s innocent this time.

It's interesting that Mike complains about Kyle Soller's arc, and then complains about not being shown where the ISB people and stormtroopers come from. I thought Kyle Soller's arc was perfect for showing exactly where those people come from: He's a dude of medium competence and little means who gets kicked in the teeth over and over by the Empire, accepts that as part of the process, and slowly assimilates into whatever niche he fits best in. That he isn't a bad dude is crucial, it doesn't make sense that the whole empire would be sneering villains so much as self-serving bureaucrats. The banality of evil, and all that. The Empire is bound to be just a bunch of people like him. Well meaning, misguided, and not particularly stupid or smart.
Also, Stellan Skarsgard being a Jedi doesn't automatically ruin his character. I thought one of the things that this series did really well was take Star Wars icons/imagery and make us consider them in a different light. Like the TIE fighters - they seem so inconsequential as they get shattered in space by X-Wings, but take one and fly it low and fast over some helpless people on the ground and all of a sudden they're filled with a brand new power and menace. It would be interesting to see that twist on a Jedi. Someone like Skarsgard, who hasn't turned to the dark side, but ain't exactly noble or honorable in pursuing their goals. Of course, this breaks the whole dark side/light side dichotomy (or should I say Force Dyad? Jesus Christ.) I don't think Disney will let them explore this too deeply, but I personally would love for them to explore someone who doesn't fall neatly into the light or dark camps.

A lot of their questions are actually answered in expanded stuff like the comics or the animated shows. Clone Wars is about the empire taking down the current status, Bad Batch is them establishing themselves throughout the galaxy, Rebels is about the establishment of the rebellion on a galactic scale. Economics, local planet govts etc, those niche details are dug into a bit, for what would be imho too esoteric/boring for large scale stuff like the movies or even the live action shows.
