Half in the Bag: Everything Everywhere All At Once

Half in the Bag: Everything Everywhere All At Once

you should try it!

Might be funny, but it’s my reality. I am a bitter, tired person, except when I watch Star Trek apparently XD

A good example for the futility of "representation" in modern movies... movies can represent all they want, they're still doing it wrong. Obviously, "Everything Everywhre All at Once" is not an accurate portrayal of Chinese family structures, because the mom in the movie likes her daughter... XD

Manuel Johnen

I prefer “Jesus Frank”

Oh Jesus Christ... XD

To clarify, I’m talking about characters like Spock, K'Ehleyr, Deanna Troi, B'Elanna Torres, Ziyal, heck even Miles and Keiko (my dad is Caucasian and my mom is Chinese). They’re all fully fleshed out characters, with their “biracial” identities acknowledged but not constantly the focus. And from a nonbinary perspective, I deeply identify with Odo in many ways.

Manuel, absolutely! I’m actually a huge fan of the TNG ep Parallels and thoroughly enjoyed that part of their discussion. Also, being biracial and nonbinary, I find more accurate representation of myself in Star Trek than I do in most popular films, even if it’s not intentional on the creators’ part

"I’ll probably skip this fairy tale and rewatch Raise the Red Lantern instead for some real Chinese cinema." You mean the family relationships ruined the movie for you and made it unbelievable, not the multiverse jumping...? :P

Manuel Johnen

You forgot the Joy Luck Club as a likely influence - lovely film until the mothers and daughters all “see” each other in the end. The worst part about Hollywood “representation” of Chinese folks is when it’s “about family”. IRL Chinese daughters rarely see eye-to-eye with their parents unless they choose to uphold tradition, and even then it’s unlikely. I have a Chinese mom. Nothing is ever enough, there’s always a negative perspective or comment to add, she’ll never be proud no matter what. Same with her and her mom. And yes it would all be different if I’d have been born a boy. I’ll probably skip this fairy tale and rewatch Raise the Red Lantern instead for some real Chinese cinema.

I can't say I understood it completely, I felt like I was watching Primer if it was directed by Steven Chow. The Nic Cage thing was a dud for me.

Damon Killian

Slightly random are you guys gonna review mad god

James Murphy

I feel the same way as jay. I liked the movie but I didn’t love it.

John Schmulowitz

You guys can call him Short Round but he will always be Data to me.

Josh Wright

That Nicolas Cage film is genuinely quite good

Peter Kelly

I want a print of that original artwork of the Gang at 11:44. Chefs kiss!!

Y'know I missed when Mike would try to gauge wether or not a movie was suitable for your grandmother. I'm glad this review brought that back.

Michael Parker

Mike - in Parallels, I recall it was proximity to Geordi’s visor, not Worf’s choices, that were causing him to shift universes. Maybe check with Rich?

This patreon community is like family. And that's what's so powerful about it.

schopi

Probably.

Manuel Johnen

I finally joined the patreon. Am I in a cult now?
