NEW VID - Rockstar's Game Design is Outdated (also quick update on Patreon stuff)

Thank you for being so patient!

As you can see, this is a VERY long video that I spent what feels like a billion hours on. I'm very eager (but mostly nervous) to hear what people think about the things I have to say on Red Dead 2 and Rockstar's game design over the past 20 years.

I also included an attached MP3 of the instrumental I made for the shout-outs in this video so that you and your friends can get drunk and rap to it too.

Lastly, at the end of the video I mention how this vid was gonna be the last series of shout-outs for a while. The more recent projects I've been working on have been more time consuming than usual and (as you've seen over the past month) my upload schedule has been pretty all over the place. So it kinda stresses me out and makes me feel shitty for making people always wait for the shout-outs until month(s) later.

So if you started supporting me on Patreon earlier this month mainly to get a shout-out, if you remove your pledge before the end of the month - you won't be charged.

Sidebar- none of you should EVER feel bad about removing a pledge for any particular reason. You're all so so so nice and do enough by just watching the vids and I'm doing just fine on the money side so no worries, ever.

Alright that's everything I think. I'm gonna celebrate this vid going up by seeing Spider-Man tonight.

xoxo,

Jacob

I did exactly the same damn thing with the Harmonica guy in strawberry and was so upset when it didn't work. Also happy you managed to take the step to stop the read outs as they were stressing you out. It's tragic to see people get overwhelmed by things that they don't want to stop for fear of letting others down when you always need to be consideration number one. Lots of love my guy <3

love you jakey <3333 smooch smooch

Darknud

This is exactly how I felt about RDR2, thank you for putting it into words haha

Gonna Bounce on this vid while I eat some hot za

Have you ever heard of the concept of Paidia and Ludus, Jakey? It's very closely related to your Lego Set/Bucket analogy, though yours may be easier for non game designers to understand. Ludus = play with a goal in mind; controlled play Paidia= play for the sake of whimsy; spontaneous play The idea is that all games fall in a spectrum between these two. When you play with a soccer ball by yourself, merely kicking it around, tapping it back and forth, this is Paidia. You aren't trying to do anything in particular with the ball, it's just inherently fun to use the ball. But once you bring your friend over and try to kick it into goalposts, and say you can't use your hands to grab the ball mid game, it become Ludus. Same thing with video games. While Super Mario 64 has the goal to collect stars to go defeat Bowser, you can have a lot of fun just exploring the castle, triple jumping, finding glitches, and goofing off without ever trying to get a certain amount of stars. Therefore, Mario 64 is very Paidic, but has some Ludus. Ocarina of Time is almost the opposite of this, where there isn't quite as much room for experimentation with it being fairly linear and funnels you to certain points in the game, with some side quests off the distance. However, when you shamelessly attack the cuccos in the village just to see what happens, this is undeniably Paidia. Basically the academic terms of your Lego analogy in case you were curious. Lovely vid 🤠

Thank you for your hard work, really appreciate it. Dog fucking bless <3

Just based on the title, I think I'm gonna love this one. Your vid on GTAV really resonated with me, talking about how it's detailed and beautiful but feels kinda empty, and I got the same vibe from RDR2, so I'm thrilled that we can hear your thoughts on the new boi.
