I dug out my first Shard draft from 2017 and thought it might be fun to share with you some "deleted scenes". I'm thinking about turning one of those into bonus pages for the "special edition" issue in the distant future. In the meantime - enjoy :-)
This page was written to "anchor" Twilight and Spike's life in Canterlot, show her classmate and confuse Spike even more.
Panel 1
Spike sends the scroll away.
SFX: Woosh.
Ponies: Oooh!
Lyra: This is so cool! I wish I could have a dragon.
Minuette: Lyra, he’s not a pet. He’s Twilight’s...
Panel 2
Minuette: Errr, what exactly are you, Spike?
Spike: Eh? I’m...Twilight's assistant.
Twinkleshine: An assistant? I thought you are more like a baby brother.

Spike frowns.
Spike: Brother…?
Twinkleshine: Yeah, you know. Aren’t you, Twilight and Shining Armor like siblings?
Spike: I don’t think so...
Lemon Hearts: He’s so handsome...
Panel 4
Lemon Hearts: She hatched you during her exam so maybe she’s your mama?

Spike looks downcast.
Minuette: Don’t be silly, Lemon. Twilight would make a terrible mom.
Twinkleshine: Besides, she’s our age. She’s too young.

Lyra: I know! You are her familiar . Like Philomena!
Minuette: Lyra, familiars are--
