Behind the scenes post - New trick in my arsenal!💫
Added 2023-03-19 00:00:01 +0000 UTCHello hello!
This is a bit unusual from me, but I thought I'd share a little post about a new tool that just got released in the art program I use for my work, cause I think it might be interesting for y'all to see how things go in production!✨
So, the program I use is called Clip Studio Paint and they just released a new version with a lot of important, quality-of-life changes for artists.
For example, we can now FINALLY select all text on a page and resize/recolor/change all of them at once.
Beforehand, if I wanted to recolor the text for a character (like the Prince) I had to click on every single speechbubble of his one-by-one and change the color individually on them. It was so tediousssss.
They also released 3D head sculpts that we can now customize to actually fit our artstyle to help with weird angles and consistent scaling/proportions!
I tried it out yesterday and honestly, I was shocked with how closely I was able to replicate Karta's face. I mean, look at this:

I took a sketch from the chapter I'm working on right now, did some guide lines for where the features should be, and tried to match the 3D head accordingly. And it worked!
Okay, okay, but HOW do you match it??
This is how:

I started with one of the preset heads above, then started mixing the different types to get roughly the headshape I need. After that, I go to the bottom section and start moving features around until it all fits as much as possible.
The end result is a model that's close enough to the proportions I like to work with, and therefore is a very useful base for sketching.

As you can see in this image, the model isn't perfect (the neck is very different from how I like to draw it, the jawline is a bit too soft, the ears are lower than I like it etc), but that's fine, because it's generally a good idea to NOT trace 3D models, since the results can be too stiff, and instead just use them as a guide.
Obviously, having a model like this can't replace actual anatomical knowledge, but when you have to push out pages on a deadline, it's a huge help on days where you just can't draw to save your life haha~
Hope you enjoyed this little BTS post, let me know if you'd like to see more of this in the future!
Take care,
Madamka
