Materials #3: Starter Sewing Machine

This is kind of a well known one for most makers that have been making a while, but for the sake of new makers I am going to add it. I'm talking of course about the Singer 4411 Heavy Duty , which nearly every maker and their dog has. But why this machine?
1. Fur is very rough on machines, and a metal frame is a MUST. You absolutely 100% need a machine that has a metal frame and this is pretty much the cheapest metal frame machine on the market- even if only some of it is metal.
2. Price & Maintenance Costs. Realistically the best machine you can have for this is an old fashioned machine or an industrial sewing machine. However, a true industrial machine costs over $1,000 and without proper care and maintenance its going to cost you more. I have not made the upgrade yet and most people really shouldn't. Instead I have opted to get a cheaper machine that I can replace every few commissions or service on my own. It is almost always on sale somewhere for around $180, do not pay $200.
3. Availability. This machine is available EVERYWHERE including Walmart. You can go to Walmart and get one in a pinch. It also has warranties included.
4. You only need minimal stitch functions for suit making. You can 100% get away with a basic straight stitch and a zigzag stitch. Anything else is honestly a waste and drives up the price.
5. You can upgrade later. You don't need to by a top of the line sewing machine when you first start out. In fact, you will likely break this one through inexperience over time. It will not make a noticeable difference unless you're some kind of genius tailor hehe. I would instead invest in a serger in addition to your machine ( more on that soon!)
The obvious choice that keeps all these things in mind is the Singer 4411 Heavy Duty. This is the machine that lots of makers have that have not made the switch. Me and my team have about 5 of these babies. In 2023 we do plan to upgrade once we have the funds, but in the mean time, we truly do love these machines.
