As a forever DM, I can explain why suddenly somebody might change their actions. Normally certain character, especially martial character like barbarians, fighters, etc have a low willpower to being charmed. So targeting the biggest and strongest of the enemies into being charmed and enchanted is a very common practice to force a group to fight against themselves
