Self-quarantined Book Sale!

Told to stay home from work? Can't go to the bar? Paintball field is closed for the duration? Nothing to do but put bottles of hand sanitizer on Craigslist for $50 an ounce? Then why not use your time productively and catch up on your TWB reading!

For the duration of this stupid media-overhyped "crisis"- or until the end of March, whichever comes first- I'm having a special two-book TWB sale!

Why two books? Because I can get two into a Flat Rate envelope (or similarly sized mailer for those of you outside the US) and that's just about the most economical way to ship them. And nice and easy for me to pack and ship, too. :)

It's also just about the lowest per-book cost for overseas as well.

Pick up a set to add to or even complete your collection- or even start one! Send a set to a friend who's also self-quarantined. I guarantee I absolutely will not lick the books before packaging (or even afterward, for that matter. :) ) I've been social distancing for years, so no worries there. :)

So take the edge off your self-imposed isolation with a little TWB levity!

And as always, thanks for reading!

Doc.

Seriously... is there anyone else having this problem, or is it just me? Tried again today, I can add the item to the cart, but then when I go to Checkout, I get to the Storenvy URL, but nothing appears on the screen. Grrr.

$50/oz isn't a competitive price. Need to charge more to keep up with demand.

Please understand this is not the place for a full discussion on the subject. It's been, and will continue to be, talked about at extensive length elsewhere and in more appropriate forums. All I wanted to do here was offer books to people that have been suddenly stuck at home, as well as maybe poke a little fun at those that now have a basement full of hoarded toilet paper and hand sanitizer- and hopefully make a few bucks too, because I still badly need funds at the moment.

Doc Nickel

Excuse me? Thank you for going Full MSNBC Opinion Pundit on me and both misrepresenting what I said AND assuming something written largely in jest was completely, totally serious. I assume you also believe I was actually licking the books before sending them out? Sheesh.

People in Florida think that winters in Alaska are over-hyped, too. Stay up there in isolation, Doc, where your righteous ignorance won't kill anyone.

The problem there is if you had started off with that, it would've been a lot better. But you put the words "Crisis" in quotation marks. The reason why this is an *actual* crisis is because of Coved-19's key differentiation from the common flu and why people were worried about SARS back in the day: transmission is asymptotic for a very long time and the majority of the population will not even be aware of anything more than the common flu. However it's a sleeper virus that is infectious for longer and much more easily transmissible. The low 2% fatality rate is with the best quality healthcare - it skyrockets once that care is bogged down. It is a crisis - overhyped and over saturated by the media, but assuming it's anything but is kind of misinformation as well.

The bulk of the hype comes from social media, the people that are driving others to panic-buy toilet paper, hoard bottled water, and buy all the painters' masks from Home Depot thinking those can actually stop a virus. As for a vaccine, they're starting a round of trials today.

Doc Nickel

I'm sorry, but 90% of what's out there is ALREADY misinformation. From BOTH sides. My point about the hype is things like panic-buying toilet paper and bottled water. Buying any and every breathing mask out of the hardware store- even ones that don't have a hope in hell in preventing a viral transmission. That sort of nonsense. The proper response to something like this- as it is with any flu season- is the usual stuff. Wash your hands, stay away from sick people, don't sneeze on people, stop licking doorknobs, etc. And most of all Don't Panic.

Doc Nickel

As someone living in one of the asian countries affected, let me tell you its not overhyped. You're doing a major disservice by spreading misinformation and honestly as someone with a significant fan following, you should do better that that.

Even if you do lick them, the virus dies within 12h outside of a carrier. Well, this one does anyway. Give it an extra 12h, and you are good to lick :-)

Maybe it's less of a problem up in Alaska? So far. Help save lives: stay home, wash your hands, social distancing, don't spread this deadly disease.

Why do you say "media-overhyped "crisis""? In my understanding, based on information from the CDC, the World Health Organization and virologists this is deadly. Coronavirus kills 2% of those infected, is highly contagious, there is no vaccine, and once the healthcare providers run out of the limited supply of respirators they have to choose who they are going to let drown in their own mucous. Look at where Italy is: doctors there are having to make those decisions. Experts here say that Italy today is us in ten days, if we let this spread.

Looks like Storenvy is having some "difficulties." I'm (finally) trying to buy The Longest Day, and... three different browser engines (Firefox, New Edge, and good old-fashioned IE) all take me to a blank page when I try to go to the Cart to check out. I'll try again, oh, tomorrow or so. Probably too many people self-medicating the loneliness of social distancing by engaging in some consumer therapy.

Brian Pickering

Normally that's free of charge, but just for the time being, I'm suspending it. Never know hat I might catch from those things...

Doc Nickel

Is there an extra charge for books you have licked?
