My initial thought was to improve the lease fuel efficient, because the gain on the least produces more than improving something that's already better. But then linear thinking see a 100% increase vs. 150% increase. However, all things being the same, my gut feeling was correct. The gas usage is cut in half for the half the fleet, while the 2nd option is only a 40% reduction in consumption. There is a caveat, however. This works as long as the 10mpg fleet drives the same or more distance than the 20mpg fleet. If the 20mpg fleet drives about 67% or more in distance, then it uses less gas to drive longer distances.

An interesting footnote that could be added to the mileage problem is you can in fact solve it by taking the mean like Cara attempted to. It’s just you have to use a more exotic mean. Instead of the geometric mean or arithmetic mean, you use the harmonic mean. It’s specifically for the case when you are averaging rates weighted by the numerator. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_mean?wprov=sfti1

The time I totally gave up on us ever being able to control mass shootings the way every other country except us does is when the 25 years old and younger vote failed to achieve parity with older ages. I never saw a significant voter drive by March For Our Lives.

Yes, Arizona is nicer in November.
