I am an advocate for nuclear power, with concomitant safeguards including siting waste. Other sustainable and non-polluting options, while intriguing, do not address the base problem, that of human overpopulation. That is the rub, as well as the challenge of SGU against the religulous. We can prevent descent.

Suzanne Pohlman

Hey Michael. You're absolutely right with your points about the human factor in a nuclear disaster. I think part of the argument is that we need nuclear to sustain humankinds ever growing consumption of energy. Without nuclear we are forced to rely on sources of energy that will continue our decent into a hotter planet. I dont think we ever curtail the worst of outcomes without nuclear power. Its a wicked problem.

Brendan Ridley

I was in the nuclear power program in the USN. I believe that the science is sound and safe. But people can't be trusted. Some one makes a poor decision on an oil tanker, and its a 10 year mistake. someone makes a mistake in a nuclear power plant, its a 10,000 year mistake. You don't have to go any further than Chernobyl or Fukashima to see that. They are going to need to change that dome every hundred years in Chernobyl. They are still dumping tens of thousands of gallons of radioactive water into the ocean in Japan. We are one errant artillery shell away from a huge release of radioactive istobes into the atmosphere in Ukraine. How can you still be beating the drum for nuclear power. Youa re an otherwise sane and very rational bunch. But you lose me everytime you advocate on behalf of a technology that mankind is still not and may never be able to be trusted to use. Please rethink this.

I was wondering if there had been any rethinking of nuclear power now that there is a war in Ukraine. My understanding is that Ukraine has 15-16 nuclear installations. It doe snot take a direct hit to cause a failure at a nuclear plant. If water supplies are comprised or if power to the pumps stops, you can have big problems.
