The last bit where you were talked about being sensitive to culture/belief vs just being a jerk, you said, “if you want to be a jerk, go right ahead.” This stood out to me because I run into too many people who act like jerks and have a superior attitude based on their knowledge (or their self perceived knowledge). One of the big hurdles in the skeptical (and for me atheist) movement is getting people to be interested in what we are promoting. To do that it is far more valuable to be approachable and kind, giving them room to think and grow. When someone is dismissive or arrogant or just a jerk in how they project an idea, I feel it does an excessive amount of harm to our cause. I know you were not advising people to go be jerks, but should we also be careful how things like that can be perceived if we want to progress the movement? Kind skeptics bring more minds into the light of true knowledge.

I'm with the group Lehigh Valley Humanists, and we'd be interested in hosting a talk/book promo. We're in Eastern Pa, an hour from Philly, and NYC, and the home of one George Hrab whom you may know. You can ask George how long the drive takes, but Google maps says ~3 hours to "Connecticut". Please contact me if you're interested. ASnyder@LVHumanists.org
