Sunset of BustArtist ? I hope not — I NEED your help!

TLDR: At bottom, but I hope you read all of below:

====================================

I've been pondering this for a LONG time. And I HATE having to write this, but here goes. I usually don't give specific figures, but have done that on a few instances below this time.

My "career as BustArtist" is in deep trouble. Sales, memberships, income are all down while expenses rise. Income is even down with all the added work — I started Patreon in July 2019 and began accepting personal Commissions in February 2024 to help make up for the downturn that was becoming apparent. My work week has gone from 5 days/40-45 hours to 5-7 days/55-60 hours. And yet, incomes continues to decline.

I know a LOT of people are going through this in general, but for a niche artist in this community, my experience seems to be falling at a very rapid pace, especially in the last 4 years.

My wife and I are always quite frugal and don't overspend on luxuries. We moved in 2018 to a new state and cut our living expenses by 30+% due to moving from an area that had one of the most expensive parts of the country. We drive 2 cars that are 9 and 15 years old (the later needing even more maintenance currently). I upgraded my computer in 2022 with a 2020 model (compared to a 2015 model) but only with the HUUUGE help of a loooong-time, Breast Expansion contributor/creator.

And, as you read in my post in January 2024 », this decrease is in addition to other crappy things that have happened to us. Our major car repair I mentioned in that other post and some medical bills my wife and I have had (don't worry, nothing too serious, just getting older) and further car maintenance have grown our additional expense outlay for this year in excess of $11k.

The last few releases have shown a steady decline in sales. I've tried changing things up, adding a dramatic storyline, going back to my roots in B.E. ("grOwing Influencers"). Even the popular "The Ever-Expanding Universe" sales are dropping.

Patreon membership has also shown a decline, especially over the last year! On average, membership is down about 25% from 2023 after a steady increase since I began in July 2019. I had started Patreon when I first noticed some dip in my website's sales. I began this page this in order to offset this decline. It turned into a fantastic venue to be more deeply involved with my fans (probably 95% of all Patreon images come from the minds of my members)! There is more interaction and discussion than before. But this has changed noticeably in the last 18 months.

And with expenses increasing (website hosting; Patreon fees; credit card processor fees; PayPal fees; domain name fees; business taxes and filings; software purchases and subscriptions; Con attendances, etc), this is further taking a bite out of my income, which is what we ALL need to pay our mortgages, insurances, food, and clothing. Vacations? What's that? Weekends off? Not always.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE doing the work, and having one's own business is not easy and takes a lot of time. But the time is increasing (2018: 40-45 hours a week; 2024: 55-60 hours per week, which started as early as Aug 2023) and the bottomline income is dropping while increasing the work to exhausting levels.

In the end, my income is down since 2017 by 28%. Add in inflation, and my purchasing power is down 43% since 2017 (based on inflation calculators).

============= How can you help? ===========

1) Help me to promote my work

Adding comments to say how much you enjoyed an issue or patreon image or commission in a public forum really helps. It shows new viewers or causal observers that my work is liked and worth a purchase. I am on Twitter, Patreon, Discord, Instagram, BlueSky, and Blogspot.

Share or comment; like and forward; spread your love of my work.

On that note, please remember that most of my work is paid for. If you want to share something of mine, makes sure of these things:

2) Increase your contribution to my work, if you can:

=================================

WHY is this happening?

1) I think the BIGGEST hit is due to "A.I. images" (I refuse to call it "art") These have exploded in popularity and amount of people programming these images.

The output is much more than what I can hand draw. An AI programmer can produce many, many images in one day. I can't.

So, BA, you say, why don't you start doing AI?

2) The incredible increase in creators out there. Hey, for a community, that's a good thing! I can't deny this. But it makes me less and less relevant and less discoverable. This is why I ask for help in promotion (as stated above).

3) Gaining new fans. This is very difficult with #2 above (number of creators), with the glut of AI, and the increased amount of forums, platforms, etc. This is where your help in promotion could help me! I also read somewhere that newer generations entering the community have different tastes, fetishes, etc. Maybe I'm becoming outdated and irrelevant? I'm ready to pivot, but I'm not sure how. I would not mind some insight from newer fans, or even other observant followers.

4) Pirates SUCK. Even worse are those who share on piracy sites.

=================================

What happens if things don't work out?

So, sorry to dump all of the above here, but I needed to say it. So, what happens if things continue to decline? Well, I will HAVE to get a full-time job elsewhere, and my BustArtist work will drop to MAYBE 10% of my current levels (IF I'm lucky).

What will stop?

Most likely, the first thing to stop be the grOw series, it all it's forms. I will leave the website running, but no new content will be created. I won't have the time that is needed (it takes full-time work, over a period of 10-14+ weeks to produce 1 issue.)

Patreon MIGHT continue, but in a VERY curtailed format. I think I would have to go from 7 images per month to 1-2. Of course, that will mean a change in memberships tiers to reflect this.

Commissions may continue as they are. But I won't be able to produce 2-4 per month, more like 1-2 as I would only be able to work weekends.

However, I am sure that Patreon AND Commissions won't be able to happen at the same time. It's either one OR the other. I will have to decide the weight of each in terms of time and benefit to see which one wins out.

However, know that unless something catastrophic happens, I will make sure to complete the current Patreon cycle, or issue, or commissions before changing my schedule, even working all weekends if I should start a full-time job.

=================================

WHEN will this happen?

Right now, I'm not sure — it could vary. I see the possibility of this happening as early as 3 months. If things go well, maybe 12 months. I hate to say this, but unless something drastically changes soon, I don't see me lasting past 12 months. I hope I am wrong. I was planning to continue to be "BustArtist" well into my retirement years (which is still a long way away).

=================================

P.S. I won't be attending SizeCon 2025

Because of the above, the costs involved (and the return which has been next to nothing each year), and the fact that I am a VERY bad flyer, I won't be attending SizeCon 2025 which is on the opposite side of the US from me, about 3000 miles (4800 km) away.

SizeCon has always been in the NY/NJ area until 2025, when it will be on the West Coast of the US. I used to drive (due to fear and cost of flying and traveling with all my booth stuff.)

=================================

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS.

Thank you for your time. This is difficult, especially recently, to go through this realization.

I showed up in the community over 27 years ago, in 1997. My website and the first issue of grOw began in July 2005. This upcoming July 2025 was going to be my 20th Anniversary of grOw and my website, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make it. Patreon started in July 2019 and this past July was my 5 year anniversary, but I've been so busy, I hadn't had the time to mark it.

Again difficult.

Tears-in-my eyes difficult.

Sincerely,
BustArtist

I am from a Spanish-speaking country. Maybe one way to expand would be to translate it into other languages like Spanish or others, increasing the number by getting closer to other communities. It is only a recommendation. I will continue buying the series when I can, rest assured.

I wish you all the luck in the world! You've earned it.

That New Shoe Smell

I think I found some of your images before the internet deemed I was of age to view them (by a few months), and for a teen who was looking to do art as a career at the time, the renderings on BEA were definitely intriguing. I had never really thought much about BE until that time, and the ways it was done and the anatomical handling of the artwork just stuck in my head. Needless to say, once there was word you were doing comics, I was fully onboard, and ready to support. I did consider a blog long ago to review expansion stories, but didn’t fully commit. Recently I was thinking, “does BA allow reviews per issue? I might be willing to do that.” I will admit I didn’t go all-in on the newer Grow/Cinema iterations (purchased a few of “2”), as I was fully committed to Carl’s story. There was a thought I had that maybe you were growing a bit weary with that and felt the urge to “stretch.” Of all things, I have been bouncing the Patreon “ball” around and went over to a other person who was doing some AI art, though did return once I saw Carl’s story was further underway. So far, you’re one of the only persons I’ve been able to find that does PE and Balls Expansion. I went for one of the lower-end memberships to keep supporting, but also it just felt that no matter what idea I submitted, it was always too “out there” for most of the voting persons. Guess that’s what comes from considering oneself “strange and unusual” (it does feel that if I did request something with Marybeth, that might win). I had considered doing a comm in recent months, but am currently in the throes of paying down a big trip this year. The Art Book definitely has me intrigued, and I might be interested in going for that. As for AI art, I will admit I dabbled in it here or there, but it felt a lot like “doom-scrolling” and I was never satisfied with the results. I used it in a recent artpiece with Photoshop “massaging,” but it feels like a bit too much effort for me to go for. I’ll still try to support you, though if I do consider a comm, it might not be until after the New Year. You’re definitely one of the major influences in me getting into expansion, and some of your comic storytelling I think is in the structure of some of the stories I write on DA too.

Extreme sizes can be fun, but the more "moderate" sizes can be just as fun because the may border on "plausible." This is why I've (usually) enacted limitations on the Themed contests. I have had a lot of input (here in posts, in private messages, and even discord voice talking with another creator). I am working on someway to retool things to 1) get the word out, 2) possibly introduce new content; 3) wider reach of audience. No, it won't be right away. It'll take time to do, and to gain attention. I can only hope it will be successful 🤞 THANK YOU for the continued, long-time $upport!! 💚

BustArtist

I've been afraid this was coming for a while now. I think it's a lot of issues that have been compounding over time, including the ones you've listed. Possibly the biggest one, in my opinion, is that the BE community just isn't as tight knit as it once was. Too much content to keep up with and too many artists to support. I think another part of it is the gradual dilution of your audience over the years. As more of the "extreme" size enthusiasts have come in and dominated the market, so to speak, more of the "smaller/moderate" sizers have probably drifted on. I personally am not too big on the extreme stuff (up to a point) and my tastes are not quite as broad as others. So, I was honestly quite delighted with the first entry of gr0w Cinema 3. It was much more focused and felt like something I'd have seen when I was first getting into BE many years ago. In short, I believe that there's been a slow drift in your audience's interests. Sadly, my gut tells me that this isn't something that can be quickly adjusted to meet your needs. It'll take time to build that interest back up again. I may also be completely mistaken. Either way, I'll still be here supporting you and looking forward to your work just as I have for many years.

That New Shoe Smell

Thank you for being such a long-time fan! And THANK YOU for your generous upgrade! With all this help, I hope to explore new ways to adjust what I am doing to gain more support so that I can go as long as possible!

BustArtist

I am really sorry you have been struggling with this in the background. I too have been a huge fan of your work since the BE Archive days, you are one of the best artists for BE and expansion content and one of the first that got me into BE and this stuff to begin with. Will definitely up to the next level for you starting next month to try and help. Hopefully we can all help ease it and turn it around, also don't overwork yourself, less content would be better than no content, we fans will definitely support you and it would be a HUGE blow to the BE community if you were to be forced out 😞

Sonicshadow

Oh, I want to, no doubt. 😁 Thanks for the help and encouragement!

BustArtist

Yeah, that's been a while, back! 😁 I hope so, too... I've been given some "pointers" to help.

BustArtist

Thank you! I'm glad you've my art for so long. I will hang on as long as possible.

BustArtist

Hang in there brother!! You got the talent and the work ethic to see this dip through. You're also one of the old guard and are keeping the BE spirit alive! LOVE YOU! -Ready

Ready Art

In with CBall - loved your work since the BE Archive days when I first saw it. Hated to lose Mark T and Chili's Story archive on that site, backed up back ups to stop losing any files over the years. Hope the trend changes, will continue to support (until wife finds out..)

Buckeye5

It seems like you are the last of the generation of artist in this genre,(and probably the best) it would be a great loss to see your work dwindle and or disappear. Your works have been the best around. I have all of the comics you’ve released and look forward for the next releases. I do miss the grOw series of comics, but I know time change. Hopefully you find a balance point and continue.

Hooligan

@BustArtist I just upped my tier. Thanks

BCE

Of course. Id be glad to help if I can. I never want you to see you struggling. I enjoy your work immensely and it has been a part of my life for so long. Just sent over a little extra. Will send over even more extra when I can and look forward to purchasing the book when available.

The Bat Mantis

THANK YOU! Such a generous increase!! I appreciate immensely! And I'm very happy you liked the Commission result! As soon as my queue opens up again (within a week or 2, I hope), I will be open to your third idea! 🙂

BustArtist

WOW! THANK YOU for your magnanimous support!! 😭 And THANK YOU for being such a long time fan (at 25 years, that's nearly from the beginning, before I started my website and grOw and was just a lurker!)

BustArtist

That's all I can ask for, thank you!! 🙂

BustArtist

THANK YOU for your incredibly generous upgrade! After the dust settles, I may reach out, as I am trying to connect with a few other creators to see how they are doing, and what has worked well for them.

BustArtist

Thank you. At one time, I DID have another "real life" job than was concurrent to my BA work. But that slowly dropped off, and the BAU ("BustArtist Universe" as one fan put it, referencing Marvel's MCU) rose noticeably. When “Milk Farm” was released (2005), BA was maybe 5% of my Income. But that’s when I saw the need for more grOw (it was a one-off originally). Then by 2007, BA was 40%. By 2013, BA was 85% of income and work time. And by 2019, it was pretty much 98% (now 100%). 2017-18 was the height of my "BA career". It has dropped off steadily since. 😢 With creating 23-38 frames per month for grOw; 4 fully rendered images, 3 watercolors, 3 movies, posts and PSD uploads for Patreon (and other supporting posts); programming, designing, and maintaining my website; and, of course, all the red tape of a business and more; there is no way this could be a side job. But, a lot of people don't realize that. 🙂

BustArtist

Thank you! Do not feel obligated to add contributions if you can't do it. I couldn't ask that of anyone. :-)

BustArtist

Thank you so much!! I (we) appreciate the extra support. My upbringing wouldn't allow me to speak up before now*, it just told me to work harder. I had to overcome that for a last grasp to survive and continue my work (my "baby" as my wife put it). (*Not saying it was better or worse, just how it was.)

BustArtist

I appreciate that greatly. The Commissions were a sign that I needed yet another source of income to offset the newly incurred debt AND loss of sales. As was Patreon when I first started (though Patreon slid into my work schedule easier than the Comms).

BustArtist

Sorry to hear about the financial struggles. I know this must have been very difficult to write up. Will also be raising my pledge to help out my favorite artist! I was wondering how you were able to keep up with all these Patreon commissions and paid commissions, while also working on new Grow Cinemas. I honestly thought things were picking back up for you with paid commissions, but now I realize it was naive to believe that. Hoping things work out positive for you, whether it be an influx of new users or a new source for revenue!

Just Another Patron

BustArtist (and Juliekat) thank you for your all your contributions to the BE community throughout the years. I know this post was difficult to write, but thank you for reaching out and getting us up to speed (we didn't know it was this dire). The Wishful Thinking comic holds a special place in my heart and ever since then I've been an avid fan (15 years+). Membership level increased and looking forward to snagging one of those art books!

nowlegal

I have always enjoyed your work and hate that this situation is occurring. I'll help how I can. I wish i could make a large dent though.

Mookie Johnson

I'm not financially well off per say but I've enjoyed your stuff somewhat silently for... well it's not your full career but it's somewhere like 15. I, like some others have stated, had always assumed this was a side job and you had some other real job making you money too. I'm not entirely certain why. I would wager AI images have absolutely impacted niche fetish art like BE, let alone normal things. I know I've thrown my share of money at some of the people doing it because BE is already such a niche thing and I just wanted to support the community as a whole. Even then, it's fairly quickly lost most of its appeal for me except for with sequence animation maybe... a guilty pleasure certainly but one I've grown fond of. While the AI stuff all looks samey, the speed with which "growth" animations are getting spat out is more or less matching demand in , as already stated, this strange niche porn we seem to enjoy and it's done to something that used to take extensive knowledge to make "passable" which I think AI programs have made "good enough". All that to say... I'd certainly hope people can recognize and support the OGs.

ktc

Hey BA I upped my pledge to zealot again to help. I have been a fan of yours now for many years since I first saw your work and have tried to always support you as much as I can. And will do as much as I can afford to to keep you from leaving. I have some ideas on some things that you might try to increase interest in your work. I would love to message you about it if you have any interest in it.

The Bat Mantis

I will do what I can to keep your amazing work coming!

BCE

I have been a fan and supporter of yours for roughly 25 years, I have all of your work and you will always be my go-to in the world of BE. I upped my membership to $30 and will do what to help in other ways. Wishing you luck with everything.

Cball

Upped my Membership I've bought every release and will continue to do so, I'm all in for the art book and prints. Thank You for my most recent Commission I love it, you brought the vision to life. Now I have to think of a 3rd concept when you open up commissions again......lol

knivesjc

Oh my, THANK YOU!! I had "hoped" a few might raise it one tier or add $1 or $2. You've been so generous it your pledge. THANK YOU! 😭💚

BustArtist

To be honest, my mental picture of where you were was still "doing other work with this on the side", which is probably a few years out of date. So my willingness to contribute was informed by the cushion/situation I thought you had. If I'd known, I would have gone in at a higher tier much earlier. But trying to figure out what to share and not is a really hard thing, and of course everyone deserves as much privacy as they can. All difficult decisions for every business owner, and having seen some form of this equation from other angles over the past few years in my day job, I sympathize enormously. Hopefully, this post at least makes people who are so able sit up and think about what they can do to keep something they like in the world. No matter all that, it's a job you do very well, and it's clear over and over again that it is a passion and not just one of many subjects that someone who tries to cater to many bases attempts. (Which is fine, and some people find their passion that way, I'm just saying there's not seldom a qualitative difference, and that it can be hit-or-miss sometimes.) The humor and depth of story, development and often a theme adds a lot to make every installment different. And the varying formats have been interesting to see, with the cinema format, big drawings and color coded off-frame dialogue really striking an excellent balance and solving actual problems for when you want to cover up as little as possible. Basically, I can't wish you any better. You're always been excellent at this and I've enjoyed what you and Juliekat have been up to for so many years. It would be so tragic for this not to work out, with the community and the subject area being more extensive than ever. I really hope many other people share my view, and that many people do what they can to lend a hand or two - making your dreams come to life, the way you have given us so many ideas and visuals for so long.

cwm

I'm so sorry that you've been struggling silently with this for so long. I've been a fan of yours for years and your content was the first BE stuff I found. I raised my tier and just hope that the community can rally behind you <3

MadDonald

THANK YOU THANK YOU. One thing I didn't mention in my post is raising prices. With inflation and all, I fear losing more people than the money it brings in. I may do so one day, but this is why I've asked those who can, if they could help more (higher tiers or upping a custom pledge). I thought this would be the best compromise for now. AGAIN THANK YOU!!!! 😭

BustArtist

I know it's not this simple for all patrons, but for me it is: please charge more. I would happily pay double (or more) the current price for each issue of gr0w. I've also increased my membership tier too! I call on all other BA fans to step up 💜

purplish

Oh my god, THANK YOU!!! It was incredibly difficult to write, and took over 3 hours (not including the charts, which was an exercise I had to create over the last few weeks to show myself the truth). I can't THANK YOU enough. 😭 (and that's not just an emoji.) This is not just a hobby — but my full-time job. 💚

BustArtist

I was on Admirer ($5) and bumped it to Zealot and upped the amount to $30 per month - reminder that you can set a custom, higher amount on the page. My folder with BustArtist purchases has 120+ items in it from over the years. I don't often comment, but I really hope for a groundswell (pun not intended) of support. BustArtist was around when I first discovered that BE was a thing in the last century, I have been part of Patreon for a spell before, I joined again to get early access to the new releases and I'm certainly happy I was able to see this. This must have been a hard post to write, but I'm happy you did it so those of us who care can take action and help out. Stay classy, keep being who you are and take care of yourself. 🤗
