Deleted Scene from Blue LEDs

Hi everyone!

We wanted to give y’all a glimpse into the making of this video—so here’s a little deleted scene! This was a delightful surprise I only found out halfway through work on the script. We ultimately cut it because it took too much time away from the central story, but it’s still near and dear to my heart.

We’ve seen tons of people in the video comments saying that they also worked on the blue LED back in the day. It really was one of the biggest unsolved problems of the 80s and 90s!

Thanks for all your support on this video, it’s meant the world!

Best,
Emily

It is easier to find low cost materials which efficiently absorb higher frequency light (blue) and re-emit it as lower frequency (red, green). Special circumstances are required for materials to absorb multiple low energy/frequency photons and re-emit them as a higher energy photon.

I watched the Blue LED video, and a few days later, I was talking with a co-worker about an un-related topic, and he piped in with an anecdote about Nakamura fighting with Nichia, and I yelled "Veritassium!" and we high-fived. :-D

Why is it that blue/UV leds are used these days to create white light? Is the phosphor simply better at picking up blue/UV light energy than red/green light energy before re-emitting it?

I'm sure that overall the video was better thanks to the cut. I trust Derek on that one. But I agree with you in a sense that it's a pity we only have a limited time in this world and have to pick and choose.

Red, green, and blue were required to get white.

All I wonder is why couldn't those people just take white LEDs and substract red and green from them

Wow that is a cool story. Sad it got cut from the main video!
