Case 304: The Staudte Family

When 60-year-old Mark Staudte of Springfield, Missouri, fell ill in early April of 2012, he suspected he just had a bad case of the flu. But the situation quickly turned critical, and Mark was soon found dead in his bed. A medical examiner concluded Mark had died from “natural causes”. Yet, when other members of the Staudte family started experiencing the same symptoms as Mark had, it was clear something was seriously amiss…

Exactly my thoughts. I was shocked how fast the confession was

Sarah

Suicide Sauce i'm sure you probably didn't mean to write "all women should be dropped into the kimberly" — if you did you probably wouldn't be listening to a podcast that is generally very sympathetic to women — and probably meant to write "all abusive women." Either way, i'm very sorry for the abuse you experienced, and if by chance you did mean to say "all women" then i hope you can find more love in your heart for 52% of the population.

Can you explain what you mean with evidence?

Parrots Liz

The police interrogation of Diane and Rachel was masterful! The detective did an amazing job with these 2 ladies!

Jenny Lester

So they would have gotten away with it if they’d stopped after Shawn?

I should also point out that that comma in the opening sentence changes the meaning, and makes the comment infinitely worse than if it weren't there.

After listening to such a harrowing case, THIS is your takeaway lol

This is exactly the problem that racists have ... they see a single murder committed by someone of colour, ignore ALL the murders they've seen previously which were committed by whites, and somehow come up with the illogical inference "this is why we shouldn't have immigration". Murders are committed by INDIVIDUALS (or a small collection of individuals). STOP making it about groupings. Nothing is to be gained by making these associations, and there are so many innocent people to needlessly offend.

Oh yeah

Zac

Did anyone else yell out loud “WHAT???” at one particular moment?

I made the classic internet mistake of replying to something before reading the whole thing, sorry! Deleted my comment, but here's the bit that you can keep: I love you. I hope the world is gentle to you.

I think they meant "women will also kill for nothing more than monetary gain, as well as men." Which is true.

This is phrased a little awkwardly, but I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that women can be just as dangerous and abusive as men, and in some cases moreso because as women they're often seen as "motherly" or "weak-willed" as compared to what people *believe* are the real aggressors in husbands and fathers. There's also a positive bias towards nice, church-going ladies, no one wanting to admit that a woman who's kind and virtuous in public could be cruel in private. There are dozens and dozens and dozens of first-hand accounts of women abusing children and other family members, including their husbands. A bunch of them have been Casefile episodes! And as someone who suffered *horrific* abuses at the hands of my own mother, and whose father is disabled due to a traumatic brain injury inflicted *by his wife,* I personally think that all women, should be airdropped into the Kimberly

Diane Staudte: oh no! Diane Staudte: anyway

This is such a horrible case and I'm always struck by how little i see it talked about. Thanks for doing it and for talking about Sean's Facebook posts. He seemed like a nice guy. It's awful to think about how alone he was at the end. This is the rare case when i would not have given a perp a chance at parole. Rachel may have been brainwashed by her mom but she was still a morally conscious, educated adult whose only problem with any of this was that her sister's murder might be difficult to clean up and get death vibes all over the house. Callous beyond description. Thanks, Casefile gang for another harrowing episode.

"society says men are violent" because men *are* violent. They not only are more statistically likely to be murderers than women, they're more statistically likely to be murder victims than women, mainly because they're more statistically likely to be caught up in violent activities outside the home. Of course women are capable of being just as violent and criminal. But culturally we teach men to value and cultivate machismo, power, and hardness, all of which can easily lead to violence and criminality. That's why we're always more shocked when women turn out to be criminals; they're supposed to be the "soft" ones. The reality is that all these constructs are total b.s. and gender is a lie, and the only way forward is to treat everyone equally -- to stop shrugging off male sexual violence as "just boys being boys" or "locker room talk" and *also* stop being dismissive, mocking, or disbelieving when men experience violence and abuse, ala the Menendez brothers. There's no record of whether Sean tried to tell anyone about his own illness but it's clear he was isolated and without many resources to get help even if he had realized he needed it after his dad's death. We as a society have to get better at caretaking each other, instead of fostering antiquated ideas about gender and power that can so often leave abuse victims isolated and trapped in their environments.

AR

Interesting take. Got any data to back that up?

Fran Stalinovskovichdavidovitchsky

“Women do emotional damage to men if there is an award”? What a bizarre, misogynistic, not to mention incoherent statement to make. It sounds more like you have an issue with women than an actual opinion on the case.

Gia

Wow.

Zac

This is why you never believe a women, just because she is female. Society says men are violent DV, true, but women. Mothers, daughters. do far more emotional damage to sons, brothers. and even death if their is an award.
