Premium Episode #20 - Widden Hill Farm

43-year-old Graham Backhouse lived a peaceful life with his wife and children on Widden Hill Farm in Horton, England. But in 1984, a campaign of harassment directed at Graham left him fearing for his safety.

When his wife Margaret Backhouse becomes the victim of a targeted attack, investigators consider who could have a motive to hurt the loving couple. The focus soon turns on a neighbour, Colyn Beadle-Taylor, but all is not what it seems.

Well well well. I knew I’d heard this one before but the sensitive people on Reddit downvoted me and got rude when I suggested it recently when this one was released on the reg pod. Just now finally got patreon and here it is. I’m vindicated lol.

Great episode.

Great episode. Farming wasn't the only thing he was bad at, geez.

First I'm thinking what insanity it is to be questioning a man for threats against his neighbor and have no follow-ups when he casually says "hey, going to see that neighbor you're talking to my wife about" and then I hear the Graham telling his story to the police and go "and that's how Graham git away with murder." What a wild episode!

Demi

He did make that up but what an incredibly weird story to make up. "Hey, I started an affair with a minor." Like, cool, we're just going to arrest you and there'll be no more attempts on your life - at least in the village!

Demi

I thought he’d made that bit up?

Rosie Overell

Agreed. As soon as that part was mentioned, every other “suspect” meant nothing

Zac

As soon as I heard that he told his wife to go to the volvo and it exploded I knew it was him. What a monster

He was having an affair with a local 24 year old shepherdess for the last 9 years? That would mean she was 15 when the “affair” started. I don’t know what UK laws were like in 1984 but where I come from that is called statutory rape and grooming of a minor. This man is disgusting.

it's really heartbreaking to me that Colin most likely went over to the Backhouse residence to try to talk things through and work out what he saw as a resolvable conflict of interest created by a misunderstanding. All of the cases like this I know, wherein someone frames someone else for a different murder by luring them into their home and then shooting them/claiming a break-in, seem to involve the murder victim being either extremely vulnerable, extremely trusting and good-natured, or both.

AR

That's certainly fair! There's no harm in asking though, I figure :). I'm not upset about it.

there are over 400 forensic files episodes; i feel like it would be placing an undue expectation on Casefile to try and filter out the cases they cover based on whether they happen to be one of those 400, especially since 1) it's unlikely that all of casefile's listeners will be familiar with all 400 eps (i know i'm certainly not!), and 2) casefile's storytelling style/structure is so very different to a forensic files ep.

AR

Damn ... you stole my comment.

Bob Trenwith

“Her father was one of the best and most accomplished serial…” Oh, *cereal* growers! I was going down a rather different path there!

Hannah Wilson

I've been binging Forensic Files and to be honest it's a bit disappointing to have three weeks of the podcast in a row be cases covered in that show 😅. Not sure if you look at things like which major true crime outlets have covered cases before, but if you do, splitting some of them up would be awesome!! I know that's probably asking way too much though, but worth a shot 🙂. Thanks!
