Behind the Files

Hello everyone, we will be recording the next episode of Behind the Files this week. The cases we will cover are; Case 174 Vicki Arnold and Julie-Anne Leahy, Case 175 Gail and Rick Brink, Case 176 Yingying Zhang and Case 177 (Patreon Picks episode) 657 Boulevard. If you have any questions relating to any of these cases put them in the comments!

Hi Poppy, sorry we missed this one but we will answer here. There are a number of different ways we choose cases, it could be that it's a case a team member is familiar with already and they want to cover. At times we will come across cases by accident while researching another case. At times we are contacted by family members or friends of people involved. We have also been contacted by Law enforcement in the past requesting we cover a case. A number of cases we have covered have also been listener suggestions. There is no set criteria we have, we are open to covering most cases.

Hi Saraneth thank you for your questions. I will be recording a Q&A soon and I will answer this one on that. Your questions regarding the cases were answered on BTF though!

Not specific about any case: Would love to hear your method of case selection. There’s so many cases out there how do you find the cases and do you have any specific criteria?

Off topic-Casey, how did your 4x4x48 go? I was really happy to make a donation to MPAN and was curious how it went.

Saraneth

Second question, I’ve always appreciated the special angle used to begin telling a casefile episode. In the case of Vicki and Julie-Anne it was her friendship that lead to the purchase of the gun. How and at what point in the writing process do you decide where an episode should begin? Or what interesting side story leads into the main content? I’ve always really loved that aspect to how casefile starts off.

Saraneth

This question is for Erin, two of the episodes you worked on in this group had situations of incest, a subject that has always grossed me out, was that hard to write about? Do you find some topics harder to write about than others. What do you do to get a mental break from a really disturbing case?

Saraneth

For 657 Boulevard, what was the logic for excluding the Friends of the Broaddus Family? It’s such an interesting story because Derek Broaddus was so freaked out when the letter came in but then when the Friends of Broaddus Family letters came out, it made everyone wonder if it was a hoax.

Demi

In regards to the Boulevard: you stated the first letter received by the new homeowners was “written with a thick black pen” but the letter was typed. Was any analysis conducted to determine if the handwriting on the envelope matched any of the suspects?

Byron Ridenour

As the Casefile team saw all the research for Vicki and Julie-Anne’s case, do you think it was reasonable of the police to assume a murder-suicide theory? Even so, why do you think the police were so persistent even after contradictory evidence began to be found?

Andi

Do you think it was the dad or the criminal gangster that killed Vicki and Julie-Anne?
