Dorothy and Walky, animation behind-the-scenes
Added 2023-07-11 13:00:03 +0000 UTCThis time I remembered to save some earlier versions of the animation so I can show the process better instead of, like, describing it badly, with my words.
Just two mid-process GIFs though, let's not get too excited. But I'm sure you'll get the idea.
Here's step one:

literally just carving out the top two-thirds of Dorothy and circling it around (but giving it a bit of weight, of course, so that she slows a tiny bit at the top like a roller coaster car and then drops fast)
And a step maybe fifteen minutes into it:

Next I drew Walky out behind her, separated Dorothy's head from her neck, moved it around, emphasizing again that bit of roller coaster anticipation at the top of her movement arc, and then started carving out bits of her air to animate distinctly.
Oh, and now her glasses hop up and down.
Much much later, I'd separate her face out further, splitting out the bangs and making some variant mouths and noses.
And basically just working on everything else piece by piece until everything moves.

Very Terry Gilliam.
