This week we’re starting off with maybe the most important episode of Hunter x Hunter to date: a bottle episode featuring Gon’s emotional face-off with Pitou, and Killua’s emotional face-back with Gon (because Gon never turns around in this scene). We’ll get into it in depth but that’s literally all that happens in this one. In the next two episodes we check back in with all the other threads going on in the Palace: Cheetu begs to be killed instantly by the Zoldycks, Meleoron is able to link back up with Killua, Ikalgo deals with having blown his cover, Youpi is having an identity crisis because he can't find any of his friends and everyone keeps attacking him and it's not fair, and knuckle semi-successfully is able to keep Youpi from killing Shoot

Ep 116 is maybe the most intense episode of TV I've ever seen, and I really appreciate your analysis of it. I keep thinking about this thoroughline: In Yorknew, Gon says to Killua, "It's my job to be reckless, and it's your job to stop me." Killua has stopped him twice previously in Chimera Ant, (1) knocking out Gon when Pitou attacks Kite, and (2) his hand on Gon's shoulder when Gon, thinking about Pitou, is about to kill Morel. Both times, Gon's first words are to thank Killua, and Gon goes on to radiate light and goofy hope. All the more heartbreaking that Gon responds here by completely cutting Killua off. Luckily, Killua feels a comforting and calming hand on his shoulder from Meleoron. As a first-time watcher, I have no idea how Gon (or Killua) can come back from this place, and I'm looking forward to finding out!

2025-03-03 00:29:23 +0000 UTCI think Pitou's dialogue in 116 plays really interestingly with the scene back when the King asked the guards what his name is. At the time, Pitou's response of "You should pick a name that you think sounds nice," feels very in line with Pitou's general vibe of being down for whatever, but seeing the way they describe the king as "Someone I care a lot about," and how they don't want this version of him to stop existing, the idea of wanting the king to choose his own name suddenly feels much more like them actively wanting the king to experience self-discovery and self-actualization, from a place of love. Compared to Pouf's insistence on the King only being the King, and thus being opposed to him having any name at all. The additional context of this episode makes that contrast a LOT sharper, when before it sort of felt like Pitou just being a little quirky, and I think that's SUPER important.

2025-02-12 17:04:06 +0000 UTCI learned the other day that the 99 show actually ended partway thru the Spider's arc and continued up thru Greed Island in OVAs. So there's at least a minuscule possibility that the continued manga chapters could be adapted by the same team! Just saying cause the future chapters of the manga are chock full of topics that you all would love and I'D love to hear what kinda music Harano would make for the future arcs.
