Beast Boss Fight Poll
Added 2020-12-09 15:01:27 +0000 UTCI thought I would poll this since people seemed to have mixed reactions for beast potentially taking levels in a boss fight. So first option is he takes levels from your character if he wins, but if you beat him then you can get your stolen levels back and then some. Or whenever you beat him he will come back bigger and stronger.

2020-12-11 03:49:06 +0000 UTCI agree with Legeden's sentiment that while it would be nice to have both options but with time being a constraint my preference would be for having the beast grow stronger upon defeat. For the experienced player, the game in its current state has limited lose conditions (with a small exception of the dungeon) so having another component that scales is nice. With him taking players levels, its likely at some point the player may entirely out scale the beast and thus making his unique power of taking levels no longer a concern. Another possible idea/suggestion, in extension to the 'Have him level up if he loses' concept, would be to have the beast grow stronger when any enemy in the world is defeated. The beast's stat growth could either be static based on the number of enemies defeat in the world or dynamic where its level is based on the total experience of all enemies defeated. This gives players an incentive to dive into the dungeon and if the player survives/gets out, they are awarded with a scaled up boss fight. The only potential issue (specifically with the dynamic approach) with this is that if the beast scales too far it may effectively be unbeatable with no way to out level it. In which case the beast could lose levels upon defeating the player (which would be weird) or there is some kind of NPC the player can talk to in order to 'control' / scale down the beast so it can be defeateable again...well...at least till it out scales the player again.

2020-12-10 15:44:09 +0000 UTCI think Beast getting stronger every time you defeat him is the best way to go about this. Enemies that can mess around with player levels/stats is not a fun experience. Plus an ever stronger boss is great for players to test themselves against.

2020-12-10 06:19:26 +0000 UTCEssentially this ensures hes always a "threat" but how much of a threat is determined by how the player interacts with them. Beat him constantly? He tries to get stronger between matches. Beats the player? Hes much more dangerous. Submit to him? You risk making a giant beefy beast god

2020-12-09 23:36:38 +0000 UTCWhy not have him function in a more nuanced manner: He gains some levels if hes beaten by the player (low amount), He gains significant levels and size if he beats the player with the following caveat, the player is given the option to flee or submit upon defeat by this opponent. Fleeing only grants the boss significant levels, submitting allows the boss to steal player levels on top of that.

2020-12-09 18:19:50 +0000 UTCI like the idea of the level stealing because it would be neat to have a boss like enemy in the game that would maybe changing based off of the players stolen levels creating a more potentially dynamic boss we could in a way have control of

2020-12-09 16:45:12 +0000 UTCwell I plan on having all enemies level when you beat them, makes the grind much more interesting. So if I do it for Beast I can later apply it to everyone else.

2020-12-09 15:41:37 +0000 UTCDynamic difficulty across enemies and bosses is something I wish was in all games, tbh... This would be the first step. I think it would also be worth experimenting with the Mauraders

2020-12-09 15:38:43 +0000 UTCI'm in favor of the level stealing approach, as it gives more control to the player over the fight they want to have. On the other hand, what the player wants is often different from what the player should have for the best experience, and I am no exception... If the poll ends with him leveling up on losses, perhaps there should still be some way to have him shrink back down? Maybe not by winning, that would probably make for a weird game flow. Okay I'll stop throwing ideas around for now^^ Great game, can't wait to see what's next!
