Tarot As Enemies - The Fool

Dear Insane Children,

The team continues work on various Asylum elements including enemy design. Above is an image from Omri which depicts the potential design for a Tarot Enemy representing The Fool. The idea is that throughout Asylum we'll encounter cannon fodder enemies (think The Ruin in Madness Returns - but more interesting/varied) based on the Tarot Cards. This provides us a means for layering art and interpretation into these character designs so that they're varied and surprising.

During a recent YouTube Live Stream we touched on the subject of the companion dog(s) seen with The Fool. Many of you expressed a dislike of harming animals in game (and otherwise) - a response which myself and Martin share. So... we want to avoid battle against realistic doggos and such... but what about shadow wraith type dogs?

Here's what I wrote to Omri over on Trello:

I think we can live with fighting and killing "shadow dogs" - they just need to be magic and evil enough.

Since we see him about to walk over a cliff in the usual cards - have him do that as his entry and exit... he "walks" up through the floor and back down through it to appear and disappear. I like this sort of enemy mechanic. There can be a "tell" every time a Fool is about to appear - a glitter on the floor, a puff of that smoke... perhaps the dogs appear first and then the Fool arrives?

As for attacks and effects... The Fool represents (in the reverse meaning) blindness to danger. So it seems that his attacks, like his dogs, should be clouded, smokey, and cause the player difficulty seeing the battlefield. A smokescreen which does damage. It could be that so long as you continue to stand in his smokescreens you take damage. So Alice must move out of the smoke and attack... perhaps one of her weapons is able to disperse the smokescreen?

Let us know in the comments below your thoughts on The Fool, his smoky companions, and the ideas presented for movement and attack.

Ok, ok! Denial Alice wins. Personally, I wanted an Asylum Alice to complete this set but this is a democratic dictatorship and I don't feel strongly enough about this decision to use one of my Dictator Points on it... Besides, we can still do an Asylum Alice in the future.

One of you asked, "Why only three plushes?" Which is a fair point. No need to arbitrarily limit them.

And I did see some interesting questions/feedback on the topic of Bumby being a character in Asylum (running a toy shop in the train station). Lots to dive into there - save that for a future Live Stream or Crowd Design Session.

Anyway, Jen did this wonderful render of a Denial Alice Plush design. Should this be our next plush? Probably won't tackle this until early 2020... but doesn't hurt to start thinking about it now!

Meet "The Ringmasters" - latest poster by Omri from the Circus Realm. This will likely be the last of these - for now. Omri says,

I thought that it makes the most sense having the third poster with the Tweedles, it's their circus.

I think this is the last of the series... i'd ask the patrons? if they want more of these we can stretch it to 5. Norman will help me with the goats on the bottom.

BTW symbolism, the first is sadness, Pris has Jabberwock's head on her hat and in this one it's demon summoning.

For "the goats" I asked Omri to make sure those come out "super satanic" as my mom would love that. ("No, I won't" - mom).

Everyone's favorite Mysterious Model, Lulu, is going in for surgery today. We suspect she swallowed something naughty. Her "pipes" have been blocked for days and she had to go into the doggy hospital for an IV and observation. Multiple xrays have revealed "something" in her intestinal tract. Not good.

So, if you love Lulu as much as we do, light a candle, say a prayer, howl at the moon - and join us in hoping that she'll make a swift recovery.

We're missing her farts and licks very much :(

Tarot As Enemies - The Fool

Comments

Rather late to the party, but never mind, all my love to Lulu. I think that when Alice first encounters the Fool she can only damage him when he is fully visible. He should give a tell that hes about to become visible (Maybe a high pitch laugh?) so Alice can either dodge/parry then attack, maybe the same with the dogs they could howl/bark before they attack so Alice has warning. When hes moving around when not fully visible he should be wispy and smokey like when you catch something in your peripheral vision, but currently unable to damaged. As another idea, there could be many Fools/Dogs swarming Alice in the smoke form, but they are just projections/illusions, and the real one has something that sets it apart from the fakes like a jingle of a bell for the fool, or the noise of a chain for the dogs when Alice is looking directly at them so you can focus on the real one. As Alice levels up and so does her weapons a specific one, maybe the sword, could counter the smoke and knock him into vision (there could be a small animation of shattering glass, like Alice is breaking the illusion, and she could straight forward shatter the fakes so she can concentrate), this would temporarily stun him allowing Alice to lay some blows down. I am drawing this inspiration from another game that has a similar mechanic, but you can't bring them out of smoke form, you just have to wait. (Don't know if I am allowed to name drop other games?). The longer Alice take to defeat the Fool, the more the surrounding area fills with smoke/fog making it all the more difficult to see as time goes on, but laying blows of the real Fool/dogs decreases the smoke, as does killing the fakes?

Sending all the feel better vibes Lulu's way! I am absolutely loving the Tarot Enemies concept. I am a sucker for symbolism and when tarot is thrown into the mix , it always excites me. Incorporating the symbolism of the Fool (love that you're adding the doggo) in battle sounds awesome! I can already imagine the Magician with his table of tools and each tool is a different attack, from the pentacles, sword, cup, and wand. I'm really looking forward to what the team cooks up next. :)

I think it would be really cool if in game his animation after an attack he would trip and fall? And do damage if he landed on u? I think that would be an awesome feature.

Sending Lulu and family good vibes and healthy wishes 💖

I like a majority of the shapes on the alice plush but the eyes are way too anime-esque and cutesy. Flatter colors and more realistic eye shapes + maybe a spark or ember for the highlights would be pretty cool. Might have more to say on the enemies and all later. I enjoy shadowy weirdo monsters already though so I might have more to say when it is not past 3am.

At the risk of actually getting into it on the internet, I feel like saying that there are plenty of other games where you can kill plenty of realistic things, dogs (zombie or otherwise) included. The idea is reasonable given numerous people genuinely do not enjoy seeing or causing harm to some things. Even in digital formats. And that's enough of a controversy for video games alone. Though, i'm not really sure what fighting and killing realistic animals would bring to the game anyway? The game is entirely off the wall already in most ways anyway. Besides, the series is already plenty disturbing without adding content related to slicing and dicing some mangy London strays. Either way, I'm not trying to get into a fight or change your mind here, just felt compelled to throw that out there as something to consider.

Instead of them being leaf petals you should make the floating objects the actual tarot cards of the dogs and the fool ;-)

SUGGESTION: this is back on the topic of makeup but why not make mini palettes that are dedicated to each of the stages. Or one large palette called the Chaos Palette which has shades for each stage she goes through and you could name each shade based around her dresses (such as a yellow one called denial, a blush color for pleading, a greenish shade for bargaining, etc) for palette references look at the Morphe brand

The Fool looks like is coming along lovely. I'd be interested to see the enemy adapt as Alice gets stronger (the game progresses) as a way to show it's theme reoccurring, I think it would be cool. I had an idea for combat mechanics: in similar fashion to how The Fool will phase through the flooring to appear/disappear, I thought to have him fade with the same animation through thin air, essentially just making him invisible to Alice while he continues to attack, keeping with his alluring/deceiving theme. Alice simply has to hit The Fool to make him fade back to visibility. Thus, the weakness to The Fool's invisibility will be before attacking or while moving, he will leave puffs of smoke to give him away (which would synergize with his smokescreen well, since it would cover him entirely. I don't think we need anymore Circus Posters, but if more are made, it would allow for more variety on the in-game Circus area (random scattered about posters in the spaces Alice will explore). That can always be a benefit. Lunar Howl from me for Lulu, may she get better soon.

A speedy recovery to Lulu! Tell her to NOT swallow her toys, just to chew on them and erhmm... toy with them!

Get well, Lulu v-v

OMG yes i hate when they make that noise, it breaks my heart even if it's a werewolf with bloody teeth

I thing having the dogs consist of mainly smoke with a few visible black surfaces would be quite fitting. For a smoke screen attack The Fool could send out a big smoke ring which is as big as Alice so you cannot see over it, it should do a moderate amount of damage and stop a few meter out from The Fool so it's like a small arena. Alice should be able to attack the ring with her vorpal blade to destroy small sections of it at a time, so you can choose to make an opening and then walk in and fight in the restricted area or make a larger opening for more freedom of movement.

🏮🙏 Prayers for Lulu!

Can't wait to see how the doll and poster shape up. Also, hope Lulu recovers quickly! Poor little pupperoni.

THE FOOL and tarot card enemies sounds awesome as long as it makes sense to the whole story/plot of the game. But I love the art and interpretations that would come along with these new elements. It would probably make the physical cards be a lot more attractive as well. 😉 As for THE DOLL, I love the idea of a Alice doll though I would prefer her in her original blue dress, but if that might happen later I'm all good. SUGGESTION: However, I do think that she's too cute looking, I want Alice's characteristic menacing stare. That's all I would change besides the dress. 👗 THE POSTER has great potential and it makes perfect sense for the twins to be the next "main event". Can't wait to see the (more) finished version. And good health to Lulu, I hope that she recovers swiftly. ❤️ 🐾

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Poor Lulu! I sure hope she's okay. And all the ideas are awesome! Though wouldn't it be cool to do a classic dress plush for Patreon, then make it removable and sell other dresses on Mysterious?

Wendy Jaa

Oh no Lulu, sending hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Prayers for Lulu! Get well soon little Model!

Poor lulu prayers and well wishes for her...

Shadow dogs sound like a good idea. Demon style dogs might also be a way to go which would not upset people. The design for the denial plush is a good start. I hope Lulu gets better quickly!

Also I think for the Alice plush it would be very cute to actually make her look like a plush doll of herself, like with stitching and button eyes, kinda like the Coraline doll or the old Monster High plush dolls, or the Lalaloopsy dolls.

Oh no! Lulu, again?! I’m so sorry to hear about this during such a stressful time for you. I hope she comes out of surgery okay and heals quickly once again! Poor Lulu. 😢

Melissa Chanyarlak

Ooo would you consider designing a Tarot deck 😍😍 I would love to add an American McGee Alice Tarot Deck to my collection of decks for readings!!

I think so long as you make the dogs "hellish" enough, players won't have a problem with them. Take the beasts from Bloodborne or the dogs in Resident Evil for example, they were still very much doggish but they had such a demonic presentation that you didn't feel like you were slaying your neighbor Fido. I'm also sorry to hear about Lulu, hope she gets well very soon.

Poor lulu! Get better😔❤ I love the beginning of this dee and dum poster and I'm definitely feeling this game could use more...satanic imagery lol Alice doll is super cute I love how she came out! I love the finished fool character! I'm excited to see the various other tarot images. ❤

Hellhounds man, hell hounds, sorry to hear about Fart god lulu I'll head bang for her at this slipknot concert

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ *** Positive energy for Lulu ***

I think the spooky doggos are a good idea, as long as they don't make like a whiny sad noise when they die. Tarots as enemies also sounds pretty cool, I really like the Fool's design! I am persinally not interested in having an Alice plush, but maybe others will. Send many good hugs to Lulu from me, if she just got something stuck I'm sure she will be just ok. You said so yourselves earlier that she is a strong girl <3

Definitely not Adam Driver

YES! ARCANA CARDS ARE HAPPENING!
