Oscar Noms

What did ya'll think of em? I will likely shoot a video on the noms sometime this week or next week. Just do a video where I tell you who I'd pick, and who I think will win. That kind of thing. Wasn't surprised May December got the boot since it was pretty much absent from the SAG noms, and Nyad started getting all that momentum.

It would surprise me... but definitely could happen

Sutil

I am very (very) pleased that “The Zone of Interest” got the recognition it did. I’ve had a feeling that the decision not to award it the Palm D’Or was political. I think it’ll win International Feature — and — I could be crazy, but I think Jonathan Glazer has the next best shot after Christopher Nolan for the Best Director Oscar.

Dean Imperial

Definitely... I was expecting more noms for Barbie but was glad they didn't.

Sutil

Definitely best actress... I don't know about the rest but I hope it wins Best Director, Film, cinematography and supporting actor .

Sutil

Me too!

Sutil

I agree with you... she DID NOT get snubbed...

Sutil

I definitely hope that's how it goes... but I predict Nolan and Oppie will get the Oscar... but I'm rooting for "Poor Things" all the way

Sutil

Totally agree with you but even if she did a great job directing I still don't consider it best of the year level. And I was sure she was going to get nominated so was surprised.

Sutil

Some nominations were great, others… not so much. But hey that’s what always happens. Did you catch that Jared and Jerusha Hess were nominated for Animated short? Jared was the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. I had no idea they were in the running for a nomination and thought it was funny when I saw their names.

Interesting. I do applaud the direction of Barbie for sure. But I still wouldnt give it a best picture nom. I think it's still more the clout that takes care of that and less the quality. And yes...I agree that if you're gonna give them anything, screenplay is not the thing. But I have a feeling that they may give Greta screenplay since they left her out of director. I'm not at all surprised by the love for American Fiction. I knew early on this would be the sleeper that sneaks in, just like Nyad. Had a feeling about both. I am not versed on the academy politics to know how all that works but...yeah, both are "culturally relevant" hence the noms.

Haha oh well...that's how it is. I havent really been paying attention to the discourse because, I dont really pay a ton of attention to oscar stuff. More just peripherally. But yeah...the problem is you jump on the diversity train, and people will constantly call you out for hypocrisy. If a white person wins anything its racist towards minorities. If a woman is not nominated it sexist. It's how it goes. My favorite thing was Hillary Clinton's tweet to both Margot and Greta. Dunno if you saw it...just masterful. 🤮

Deepfocuslens

I dont think it will. I think best shot it has is to get a screenplay oscar, or best actress.

Deepfocuslens

I wouldnt give him a win, but he deserves a nomination a lot more than someone like Bradley Cooper

Deepfocuslens

A surprise to be sure...but a welcome one. XD Barbie I figured would get a good chunk of nominations that it didnt deserve. But I do think that a best Picture/Director nomination feels a bit much.

I was fully on board for Greta Gerwig getting a best director nom, she directed the hell out of Barbie. She had the chance to make her big technicolor Hollywood musical, and by god, she did it! But I was really hoping that she and Noah Baumbach would NOT get nominated for best screenplay, cuz the screenplay was by far the worst part of that movie. It’s just so full of plot holes and logical inconsistencies and went about it’s messaging in such an on the nose way that I’m actually shocked it’s considered one of the best scripts of the year. REALLY weird how the result was switched like that. Also surprised at all the love for American Fiction, cuz I saw it on Sunday and honestly thought overall it was kinda mid. It had two separate storylines that seemed kinda at war with each other with one being, I thought, vastly more interesting than the other. And neither of them really feed into the other or have any large effects on the other. I liked it overall though. I am however VERY happy at the Godzilla Minus One nomination, and I am also now more hyped than ever to see The Zone Of Interest. I can’t believe I have to wait two weeks to see it, it’s gonna be torture!

I pass some categories and I haven't seen every movie that has been nominated (Past Lives, Nyad, Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, American Fiction, The Zone of Interest, The Holdovers, Rustin, The Color Purple, El Conde, Flamin Hot, American Symphony, The Creator, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Golda, Society of the Snow, Godzilla Minus One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, none of Live Action Short Film, Animated Short Film, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Feature Film, International Feature Film, Animated Feature Film), but here are my predictions. Best Picture: - Poor Things Best Director: - Yorgos Lanthimos — “Poor Things” or Christopher Nolan — “Oppenheimer” Actor in a Leading Role: - Cillian Murphy — “Oppenheimer” Actress in a Leading Role: - Emma Stone — “Poor Things” Actor in a Supporting Role: - Robert Downey Jr. — “Oppenheimer” Actress in a Supporting Role: - I don't know Adapted Screenplay: - “Poor Things,” screenplay by Tony McNamara or “Oppenheimer,” written for the screen by Christopher Nolan Cinematography: - “Poor Things” – Robbie Ryan Original Song: - I don't know, maybe “What Was I Made For?” Costume Design: - “Napoleon” – Janty Yates and Dave Crossman or “Poor Things” – Holly Waddington Sound: - “Oppenheimer,” Willie Burton, Richard King, Gary A. Rizzo and Kevin O’Connell Original Score: - “Poor Things” – Jerskin Fendrix Film Editing: - “Oppenheimer” – Jennifer Lame Makeup and Hairstyling: - “Poor Things,” Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston

Jfc, the amount of bitching in the media I have seen about the snubbing of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig…they literally call out the patriarchy for denying them their Oscar noms. You would think that Justine Triet and Anatomy of a Fall doesn’t exist given the amount of outrage. Their not being nominated couldn’t possibly be because…I don’t know, maybe Academy members found 5 other nominees they were more impressed by and more willing to consider? Substantial arguments can be made that all nominated directors made more incredible artistic achievements than Gerwig. That’s especially true of Jonathan Glazer with Zone of Interest, the surprise nominee who most likely took her place. And I can think of other snubbed actresses more deserving of a nomination than Robbie. Natalie Portman, for one. Unfortunately it was a tough Best Actress race this year. Gladstone, Hüller, Mulligan, and Stone were shoo-ins and there were plenty of solid performances competing for that fifth spot. Robbie was fine as Barbie, but the movie was stolen by Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera got the big feminist moment of the film with her monologue about women’s roles. Her performance by no means guaranteed recognition. Barbie was a cultural event, and it was a much better film than it could have been, or really had any right to be. As many butthurt feminists have declared ad nauseum, that’s in no small part due to Gerwig and Robbie. They made a lively, inventive, hilarious film with something on its mind. But there were better films this year, and that’s not a controversial statement to make. Hell, Poor Things made for a better, more audacious feminist film, and rightfully stole some of Barbie’s thunder. Dissenters need to get the fuck over it and save their vitriol for when it matters more. Otherwise people will be more inclined than they already are not to take them seriously. The patriarchy did not punish Barbie for its success. It simply saw better movies. Stop treating it like some X-Files conspiracy. They sound like embittered morons.

Bennett Oliver

I hope Poor Things dominates.

Dushan Perera

I think Zac Efron should’ve been nominated and even deserved to win

Henri J. Mertens

Of course, Barbie and Oppenheimer are in the Best Picture running. Not a year goes by now where the highest grossing films aren't always nominated whether they deserve it or not. My only curiosity for the awards...I mean clown show is what kind of stupid and cringe debacle is going to happen?

Wolfman Brandon

Godzilla minus one's nomination for best special effects is cool... not because they were the best of the year... but because they were the best for the price lol... I would give them the Oscar for sure... and America Ferrara? ... really? Otherwise a solid year for the oscars... (in Oscar standards)

Sutil

I was pleasantly surprised Greta Gerwig did not get the nomination for director... I'm sorry, I just did not like Barbie as much as everyone else did... not many surprises... I'm just glad "poor things" got all those nods... Oppenheimer will probably take most... I agree with DFL that the Oscar's don't matter... and they have been especially irrelevant in the past couple of years but I can't complain much with this years nominees... and I know DFL's take on DiCaprio... but I do believe he is progressing as an actor and he is getting better and better... and was a bit surprised he did not get a nomination for "Killers" ... and for foreign films I've only seen "perfect days" "zone of interest" and "society of snow" ... and all three are amazing... I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually think it's a good nominee list this year... I'm rooting for "Poor Things" all the way...

Sutil

Really from the lady who made a video saying the Oscars don’t matter? Jk lol Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie both not getting nominated for Director or Actress was a surprise. I thought those two would be a given but then again I don’t think I’d nominate them. DiCaprio not getting nominated for Killers. I’ve only seen Giamatti and Murphys performances so I can’t speak to the other three but I was happy to see Jeffrey Wright get nominated since apparently this is his first time. Penelope Cruz not getting nominated for Ferrari. Really American Ferrara in Barbie over her? Okay. It was fun seeing the Godzilla Minus One crew’s reaction to getting nominated. I will say it’s a rare year where three of my favorite films of the year - Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things - are all the main contenders. Can’t go wrong!
