Chris Von Erich

If any of you have seen The Iron Claw, what do you think of the script excluding Chris from the film? A lot of people have complained about it. There are a lot of creative liberties taken in the film beyond just this one, which I think is important to note. But I actually support this particular decision from a narrative standpoint. Kevin Von Erich also seems to understand, and supported the decision. What do you guys think?

For sure. I feel the same way. I do think that fame had a lot to do with it, public pressure as well. You have normal Texas family of the time with a WWII veteran father. But throw in a lot of public scrutiny that could be hard to handle at a certain point, and perhaps it all combusted within this particular family. Also the culture of wrestling was one of destruction and tragedy just on its own. So I'm sure environment played a part as well.

Yeah, I read an interview with Kevin standing up for his dad. I’m probably falling into a trap looking for the reason why it all happened. It was just an unbelievable tragedy for one family to deal with.

Chris's story was combined with Kerry's and a little bit with Mike in the film, which is where you can feel a lot of that emotional conflict you mention, which I feel was appropriate. In a narrative where all the brothers are given focus, an additional brother would be overkill. Perhaps the wrong one was discarded in the story. I dont know the actual story to be able to offer an opinion there. But narratively, I respect the choice, and so did Kevin it seems. I think everyone in the film knows that each brother likely deserves his own film. But in a film of this nature, you gotta take certain creative liberties so the experience flows. I am glad they didn't villanize Fritz. It would be way to easy to villanize him. Kevin said he never saw his dad as evil or cruel. He just saw his as very strict and stern but he had massive respect for him and for his family. I think it was much better to go this route, as fathers like this are more complex than that.

I understand trying to keep the movie to a reasonable length, but growing up during this time in Texas, Chris’ death was the one that hit hardest because it seemed so clearly to come from a despair of being small and not living up to the family name. (I’m sure it was more complex than that, but that’s how I remember it from childhood.) At least in the movie, you can almost understand Mike and Kerry’s actions, both physically debilitated and facing futures they didn’t want to live. I was actually surprised the movie wasn’t harder on Fritz. Maybe Kevin knows it was more complex and didn’t want to put everything on his dad.

I agree. I think at a certain point it becomes overkill for a feature film. So it was fine with me they created a hybrid brother situation

It's a tricky issue, because you don't want to exclude another person who also underwent a tragic fate, but I do generally agree that adding another brother into the dynamic would make the movie relatively unbalanced. Idk, I don't have a strong opinion on this one.
