The Philippou Brothers

i dunno how familiar you guys are with these guys, but I've looked them up quite a bit since their debut film TALK TO ME, became the sleeper horror hit of the summer. Truly some very polarizing, yet infectious individuals. I know Joe Rogan saw the film, and mentioned how much he loved it on instagram. Recently he had both brothers on his podcast, which is just the most incredible opportunity for any artist. Get Joe Rogan on your side, there is power to be had. So glad he gave these guys a platform, and interesting to hear them talk in a more long form format.  Especially since I could never imagine these guys sitting still for more than five minutes at a time before this. They are...a lot to handle, as you might expect. Even Rogan seemed a little shocked and uneasy at times. For me, TALK TO ME is one of the more emotionally effective films of the year, and one that resonated with me on an intimate level. I get the destruction and the juvenile/mischievous behavior in the movie from these two. That much is very clear. But neither of them seem too introspective. So I had been trying to find the connection between these silly, very ADHD personalities, and this all consuming darkness of the film. I think here I finally got a sense of those origins somewhat, and they even discuss their family history with depression at a certain point. Someone in the comment section described the brothers as the real-life versions of Terrence and Philip. I can never unhear that. Most ingenious observation of all time. XD

haha well I'm glad that you turned off the review at least, just in case.

I do think visually it needs more to match the quality of storytelling.

Felt skeptical for sure. Still do. But I dunno. I'm curious.

I will check the movie out. A coworker gave it a lot of praise, said I missed out by not seeing it in the theater. When you told me to stop your youtube review if I hadn't watched it yet, I did exactly that. I was gonna watch it that afternoon, and then got redirected and lost the thread. Oh well... There's something about its aesthetic that turns me off a bit, like eating ice cream for breakfast...

I really disliked Talk to Me, and hearing them talk kind of explains why lol. The movie to me felt claustrophobic and manic in a way that was highly unpleasant, not suspenseful. And the use of shallow focus was absolutely maddening. I liked the story though.

Haven’t seen Talk to Me yet, never heard of these guys before. But they seem cool. Yeah, they’re a little hyper, but they’re clearly in the initial phase of their career where they’ve broken through and are still processing their new reality of being peers with the people they’ve grown up admiring. True, if you spend too much time with them, you’ll become exhausted, but based on this clip there’s something endearingly modest about them. I just hope they don’t become too jaded or arrogant after a few years in the business.

Yeah I checked out their Youtube page after seeing the film and needless to say they definitely have hyper personalities. There are a few Ronald McDonald sketches that are pretty funny. Sometimes a little too much but always have a degree of horror present. Been meaning to check out this interview. Thanks for the reminder!

Stephen

Haven't heard of them but glad to hear lesser known talent getting recognition.

Wolfman Brandon

Curious if you have any opinion on them working on a sequel considering how much you enjoyed that first movie.
