October Movies

Month of Halloween is coming! What films are you looking forward to seeing in theaters and why?

Comments

There's a Korean BBQ place walking distance from the theater I often go to!

Deepfocuslens

Looking forward to see DECISION TO LEAVE because it's a new Park Chan-wook's film.

Oskitello

Ooh, he’s all good then.. nevermind!

Mees

Excited for Decision to Leave. Gonna get some good Korean BBQ after the movie

Emerson B

Alright, just watched the trailer for Mad God because I hadn’t heard of it. Looks really cool. Might have to rent it.

Bennett Oliver

It's my favorite as well.

Stephen

Forgot about Armageddon Time. James Gray is always intriguing.

Bennett Oliver

Mad God is still my favorite movie of the year. Would love to see Maggie do a review at some point

TAR (October 7) - Good word of mouth. Apparently Cate Blanchett gives the best performance of her career here. Decision to Leave (October 14) - A must see. Park Chan-wook's follow up to The Handmaiden. The Banshees of Inisherin (October 21) - I'm mixed on Martin McDonagh's output but I'm definitely a fan of In Bruges. Based on what I'm hearing this is a return to form. Armageddon Time (October 28) - A new James Gray movie is always a must see. Can't wait! As far as any new horror movies coming out I only see sequels, reboots and some indies that might be alright. I will however recommend a few great horror films I've seen this year: * Speak No Evil (Shudder) * We're All Going to the World's Fair (HBO Max) * Mad God (Shudder)

Some good stuff is coming out this month. Amsterdam—David O. Russell’s 1930s mystery comedy with Christian Bale and Margot Robbie. Huge ensemble cast (but strangely NO Jennifer Lawrence). Given the trailer, his usual madcap touch is likely to be seen. Triangle of Sadness—Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or winner with Woody Harrelson and the late Charlbi Dean. Have not actually seen any of his films before this one (Force Majeure, The Square), so I should probably rectify that. Heard it’s funny. (Limited release) Decision to Leave—Park Chan-Wook’s latest film. Sold, I’m there.(Limited release, but MUBI is distributing it, so it may be coming to their channel, which I’m subscribed to. So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.) The Stranger—Australian undercover crime drama starring Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris (the bad guy from the last Mission: Impossible film) based on a true story. Sold, I’m there. (Netflix) The Good Nurse—thriller starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne that is based on a real-life serial killer named Charlie Cullen. sold, I’m there. Love true-crime stuff. (Netflix) The Banshees of Inisherin—a new Martin McDonagh comedy that reunites Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Set in Ireland, McDonagh should be on more solid ground than he was for Three Billboards of Ebbing, Missouri. Farrell’s supposed to be great in this. I hope so. I think he’s a very underrated actor who’s come into his own since his Alexander days. (Limited release) And last but not least… Tár—Todd Field’s character drama starring Cate Blanchett as a world-renowned conductor. Heard great things about it, about her performance, can’t wait to see it. It will be in limited release, but I wanted to put it on your radar as soon as possible to watch out for. Todd Field is a very interesting director who hasn’t made a film in 16 years. Couple of fun facts you should know: 1. Since you’re a big Sissy Spacek fan, I want to point out that she gave one of her best performances in his debut film In the Bedroom. Very much worth checking out. 2. That famous, beloved clip where Tarantino talks about the homosexual subtext of Top Gun? Todd Field is the guy he’s talking to about it. He started out as an actor, and his most notable role was Nick Nightingale, the piano player who tells Tom Cruise about the orgy in Eyes Wide Shut. October should be awesome.

Bennett Oliver

i think the three leads are playing Americans who went there after WW2

I wonder if Bale’s character is from Amsterdam/the Netherlands. If so, his accent is a little questionable I’m afraid.. (being from Amsterdam)

Mees

No probably not, the rights revert back to Akkad after this film, so we'll see what happens. But it won't be a continuation of the Blumhouse timeline.

luckEdrew

yeah I agree but tbh even if the cast wasn’t that stacked, I would show up for a Bale and David O Russell reunion alone.

Let’s be real though, it’s not gonna end

Tár and Triangle of Sadness have been big hits on the festival circuits so that’s exciting. Also really looking forward to The Banshees of Inisherin from Martin McDonagh. I like In Bruges but didn’t like Three Billboards so I’m curious about this one. I like that he’s tackling a principally Irish story again. Maybe most of all, Henry Selick has a new stop motion called Wendell and Wild that stars Key and Peele so that’s cool. I’m kind of hoping that some underrated, out of nowhere horror movies get released kind of like Barbarian this month. Highly recommend that if you haven’t seen it Edit: I didn’t realize Decision to Leave is also coming out in October but that would of course be another one for me

Jackson Littlewood

Really excited for Halloween Ends because it's my favorite horror series and I've really enjoyed the other two movies in the new trilogy.

luckEdrew

The Amsterdam trailer is very fun but I do worry that with that many cast members it might feel a bit overloaded. But maybe it'll feel like a Wes Anderson movie where they all work together well. We'll see.

I'm going to a film fest at the end of October! Super excited. Had a great time last year and got to see a lot of stuff I really enjoyed. They haven't announced the lineup but looking forward to whatever I get to see there. In terms of normal releases, Decision to Leave is coming out that month. Praying it hits a theater near me cause fuck me I'm excited for that one. Bros is end of Sept/beginning of Oct so I'll count that. Pretty big Billy Eichner friend and this looks cute as hell. There's a few limited releases coming out that month I'm looking forward to like The Banshees of Inisherin, Tár, Holy Spider, Triangle of Sadness and All Quiet on the Western Front. Doubt those will show up in my area but hoping they're at my festival.

Tyler Shobe

Tár, Triangle of Sadness and Amsterdam are all coming out on the 7th, so I’m SUPER excited for that Friday as an avid fanboy of Cate Blanchett, Woody Harrelson and Christian Bale. I like all three directors too.
