Get Cynical: The #NotYourShield Interview
Added 2025-04-25 17:22:10 +0000 UTCIn 2014, Twitter user and YouTuber NineOuh posted "#NotYourShield" on Twitter to express his support for the GamerGate movement and his frustration with the way anti-GamerGate journalists were presuming the members of the movement to be all white men. The hashtag took off, and became one of the most-discussed aspects of the controversy.
Eleven years later, NineOuh is in a different place politically and personally, and was interested in sitting down with me to talk about what it was like as a member of the movement, how he got out, and his message for young men in a similar place today. He also talks about the orientalism of the time's gaming journalism, consumer rights, pro-Black politics, and the legacy of GamerGate today.
