Doom Array Chain and my analoge Pedals + Doom 2016 Chainsaw Guitar Tone

Hi there,

So I hope everyone is doing good and having a great weekend. If not let me know.

I thought to share with you a photo from my pedals that I Iwas able to acquire through the last 13 months since I started my Patreon. Many of these were used in Micks Doom production.

Lets start from left to right:
1.RML 432 K Rev. 2

A fine distortion pedal with an aggressive feedback loop and filtersection. Can distort and obliterate pretty much any signal.

2. Moogerfooger MF 107

An analoge distortion and osscilator with filtersection. I use this thing to goose sounds or to add something to a sound, specifically with the waveform sync follower that tries to follow the input signals pitch. Rad thing.

3.  Strymon Deco

Sounds great for saturation. Imitates a tape machine and is one of the few devices out there that comes really close to real tape saturation. Plus it has a nice Delay and Chorus effect section on top of it to add depth to a signal. Love that thing.

4.  WMD Geiger Counter

That bitcrusher is wild and just brutal and nasty. I mostly use this with guitar and synth combined or when I create stacked sounds.

5. Darkglass Alpha Omega Ultra

A fine Bass Distortion Pedal. I think it has a great bass response and many options for crunched and even clean tones.

6. Trogotronic P77

It was incredibly hard to get my hands on this vaccuum Tube Distortion Unit. Its wild similar to a Metasonix TX-3 but less noisy. Has self osscilating capabilities due to its feedbackloop construction. Its the newest member, so I still need to learn more about it.

7. Animal Factory Godeater

Fuzzpedal with an incredible Bass response. Put it on a Synth or bass to fatten it up or to make a new sound out of it. Low pass it then use the Godeater.

8. Cali 76 TX-L

Analoge FET 1176 Style compressor. This thing always is used when I master my music. It is for the end of the chain. That thing has an incredible clean compression, specifically run at 18 Volts with the Lundahl circuit.

9. Metasonix Tx-3

Well, noisy as fuck, 2 feedback loops and it just goes bonkers. I found out that the CV input works great too on Synth. I often combine the Tx-3 with the Strymon Deco. High learning curve though.

10. Whammy DT

Well a fine Whammy bar with pitch shifting option. Some of the gnarly tones that you heard where playd an octave up and then pitched down and send through the Axe Fx.

11. Axe FX 2

The heart of my guitar tones. I use also an older Axe Fx 1 model for my older Guitar tones too. I love the Axe not only for its guitar tones, but for its effect section and the the way that you can literally tweak everything. Extreme learning curve though that takes time.

12. Kemper (not in the picture).

It takes a bit of rust and dust, but promised I will check there some tones too. For the Doom stuff though the Axe 2 is King, has to do with the amp modeling and cabinets I think Fractal has its sound and the bass reponse is unique imo.

LAst but not least..a Metasonix R 53 (Micks to go unit for wavetable shaping and ring modulation madness) will arrive to the family. More to come when its there.

Okay, one last little replication sound that took me quite some time from my frist try (December 2020) to its current version. The famous Doom 2016 Chainsaw Guitar Tone. To create or replicate Micks Tone, I did the following:

1. I met up with a guy doing gardening at a neighbours house. First he looked at me like I was a bit crazy asking him to record his chainsaw. But I explained a few things and then he had some fun and me too! He had a german "Stihl Chainsaw". Really a classic one and a big one. I recorded a couple of buzzing and idle sounds with my Zoon H5 that turned out pretty cool and pristine.

2. Then I returned back to the studio, chopped all the samples, time aligned them and I created in Serum a wavetable out of the chainsaw samples.

3. Then I  recorded a short riff (similiar to the reference) on the Mayones Regius 8, send it through the geigercounter profile D8 and then through the Axe FX 2.

4. Then I merged both sounds, equed and compressed the crap out of it and there you go -> Check attachement comparison files.

I thought to write some stuff with that sound in th future that bring you some more fresh Doom Vibes. Hope you will like it.

Horns up,

Alexander
