3D vs 2D - Which One Is For You?

You're definitely correct. 3D and 2D are very connected now a days, and they share very similar concepts. Good in fundamentals in one translate very well to the other. The 2D primer thing is actually something I've decided to do over the next few days. I think it will really help get people in the right mentality when approaching 3D for the first time :)

I was actually having very similar thoughts when I started getting into the Anime shader. But, luckily I've found a few a few ways to get the shading done without having to wrestle without having to spend days wrestling with the normals lol. I'll be showing you guys my findings as soon as I feel like I've got it down - Also, that's really cool bro, and I completely agree about the full-time vs part time learning curve. If you're doing it full time, then I don't think it will take 5 years necessarily. I came up with that number more or less for people who would work on and off 2 or 3 hours every other day lol

2D, believe it or not, is extremely important to have a good foundational understanding of in order to construct realistic 3D. Even if your bias is towards 3D modeling, which has been mine for years, I find myself constantly having to lean on my 2D understanding of things to be a better modeler. So I'm up for, perhaps, a quick primer of 2D fundamentals essential to the 3D modeling world before you go head on into 3D centric tips and techniques.

Getting a good 2D look honestly seems like so much work playing with vertex normals from some other tutorials that I'm honestly considering getting a nice but easier to manage visuals from diffuse shading. Haha I misinterpreted the title! e2: One thing I'd note is when I got lucky enough at my work to do 3D basically full time for a task for a month I learned more in that month than I did in 3 years, so I think 5 years is if someone is going at it like a few hours here or there, if its like 4-8 hours a day everyday like a full time job you'll probably reach "pretty damn good" after 6 months.
