2/19/18 and IT WORKS!!!

YES! After a long time looking at the array documentation, many tests, and a bunch of trial and error, I finally have set up a prototype of the inventory system. What you're seeing is one of the four menu buttons I have planned, this one leading to the inventory/equipment dual menu. An animation plays when the cursor is over it, and when clicked it "opens" the inventory (which is just 3 text objects stacked next to each other at the moment). This prototype uses two variables, and an array with all of the stored items listed inside. The player will be able to navigate an entire inventory of hundreds of items using only 3 text objects on screen at the same time (although I'll be upgrading it to 7 or so for later versions). In addition, each text object reads two values from the array, one is the name of the item, and the other is the quantity present in the player's inventory. 

Whats more, is with this test the potential of array usage became much more clear to me. I've read some other people's notes on the Construct forums about using arrays as conversation maps, with a cell corresponding to a line or window of text. I could also have a full item description in a cell for each item, which is read and loaded as it is "selected" in the menu. This is a huge step in the game, and it means that a fully operational menu is a lot closer.
