If you were involved in the most recent tests of the Trainsawlaser update, you may have heard me mentioning that the jump on the horizontal saws by mid felt different to me. I was dying while trying to jump off of it more than normal. Something about it changed, but I wasn't sure what yet. Asking void, he did say he moved it slightly to center it better on the wall, so I figured that had to be it.
When I finally looked into it, it was a hilariously small difference.
So first, the saws have a small round playerclip at their axle that players have always been able to stand on to grab the small health pack. I've commonly used it as scout to bounce off of to grab some quick health, and it even has a trick jump to the adjacent balcony that engineers like to set up in.
To compare, I decided to grab the playerclip from the original version of TSL and used PAAASSSTE SPEEEECIAL to plop it into the new version to see what kind of movement we were looking at. Picture #1 shows this, with a red line and squiggle representing the solid wall it was embedded in. The bottom circle brush was the old position, and the top one is the new. Void slid it over a bit, which shouldn't affect it much, but it does seem to have gone into the wall very slightly more. But, being at an angle, it was tough to be sure.
To check exactly how much more, I decided to isolate just the wall and two clip brushes, and rotated them so the wall was straight on grid. This confirmed that yep, it was a tiny bit into the wall more. (Picture 2)
But now I was curious exactly how much of a difference that was, so I drew a little temporary brush between the two points of the clip (Picture 3) and discovered it was exactly 1.572hu further into the wall with the new version, compared to the old. The left-right change shouldn't matter in the grand scheme, it's depth is the important number here.
Apparently, after around 13ish years of jumping on this saw, that slightly more that 1.5hu difference meant dying or not dying to my muscle memory. So of course, I'll be shifting that clip 1.572hu out from the wall in the next version. :)
This might sound silly, but it's the kind of attention to detail my brain has always demanded of me with TSL.
