From the book: They both scored 67 goals in their rookie season. In the draft, the teams that are last get their first picks. It's a rule to make the league competitive. So (like mentioned in the interview), both teams didn't make the playoffs for some years. With Shane and Ilya they made it, but not to the end.

Ran over here from Youtube to join and watch the full-lengths. So glad y'all decided to watch this! It's a great show.

Hello guys, I'm here for Heated Rivelry, so glad you guys are reacting. Time line wise, 2008 at the Prospect Cup they are 17, then 6mo. later is the draft, and Shanes bday is just before that, then 6mo. later they are back at the Prospect Cup, and it is 2010. Shane says I'll see you in October, which is when their Rookie season starts, but Ilya gets him in the commercial just 6 months later, so earlier then they would hve seen each other again, and Shane is 19, maybe Ilya too, I just don't know his birthday. Anyway, that is the official start.

I'm so incredibly grateful that you all decided to react to Heated Rivalry and I really enjoyed your reaction! I apologize in advance for this very lengthy comment. I tend to over-analyze this show, because I find its themes incredibly important. Don't feel obligated to read it, but if you do don't worry there are NO spoilers! This series is incredibly important because it provides a realistic portrayal of the queer experience (especially one in a hyper-masculine environment) and it allows people who usually don't feel seen to finally see themselves represented. *In fact: Hudson Williams who plays Shane Hollander recently revealed that his inbox is filled with messages from real-life professional athletes, who are still in the closet. These athletes, reaching out privately via Instagram or through author Rachel Reid, have expressed how deeply they feel seen by the show’s nuanced depiction of the pressures and isolation faced by queer players in hyper-masculine environments. At first I was a little surprised by the sexual scenes, but then I remembered that in shows like Bridgerton, True Blood, and Game of Thrones extreme straight sexual intimacy is so normalized it's barely even a talking point. This show is vital because it offers that same level of normalization for queer sexual intimacy that is often only reserved for straight relationships in mainstream media. What I do appreciate about the sex scenes depicted in this series (besides the obvious😉) is that they are vital, they provide meaningful character insights and essential development rather than just serving as mere gratuitous content; they are as crucial to the narrative as the dialogue. For example: The first hotel room scene depicts Shane's reaction to his first gay sexual experience. This scene powerfully conveys his complex feelings—excitement, fear, and shame—through the obvious awkwardness of the situation. The scene also shows Ilya's perception and understanding of Shane's feelings, leading him to leave the room and give Shane space. The second hotel room scene further highlights Ilya's profound respect for consent. He prioritizes Shane's comfort over his own desires by not only immediately recognizing that Shane may be frightened, but also assuring him that it's okay to be scared. During both hotel room scenes he demonstrates exceptional patience and understanding regarding Shane's inexperience. Rooftop Scene Misunderstanding: The author confirmed Shane is on the autism spectrum, which explain his difficulty with subtext, timing, and reading non-verbal emotional cues. This is evident when he fails to recognize Ilya’s dread in returning to Russia; Ilya attempts to open up when he looks at Shane with complete and utter distress, but Shane’s inability to understand nonverbal communication causes Ilya to immediately shut down. In his mind Shane is too "perfect" to understand his situation. Shane’s naivety is furthered by his privilege; raised in a supportive Canadian environment, he views family as a source of pride, whereas for Ilya, it represents deep-seated manipulation and rejection. Shane simply cannot grasp the reality of Ilya’s life in Russia. Last Names Only: The exclusive use of last names functions as a psychological barrier between the two men. By strictly avoiding first names, they negate any sense of intimacy or 'relationship' and maintain a calculated distance. Their connection is defined purely by physical release and athletic rivalry; since they only interact during the times their teams compete (2-3 times a year), their bond is supposed to be transactional rather than emotional.

Ilya and Shane's first hookup was actually in 2010. When Ilya talked to his brother on the phone, he was watching the ball drop the tv said "Happy New Year 2010".

Some things to know: - Shane is autistic which affects the way he processes his emotions and interacts with other characters so just keep that in mind. It's not explicitly stated in the show, but it was confirmed by the author of the books, the director of the show and Shane's actor Hudson, who was inspired by his own autistic father's mannerisms as well. - Ilya's actor Connor, is NOT Russian or even Eastern European at all. He's from Texas and is just insanely good at languages and accents. He had about 2 weeks to start learning Russian and developing the accent before they started filming. - Russia is not LGBT friendly, it's not illegal to be gay, but they do have anti-gay propaganda laws which allow the government to fine and imprison you for supporting or talking about it. So very much not safe for Ilya. - The NHL (MLH in this universe) has NEVER had a openly gay player. Hockey culture having a tendency to be very conservative (which adds to the layers of Shane being an Asian man in a very white dominated sport as well), hostile and full of toxic masculinity. Part of the hope is for this show to be able to change some things for the hockey league and for closeted players to feel safe. - This is based off a book series called Game Changers. Each book is set in the same universe, but focused on a different couple's story. Shane and Ilya's romance is covered in books 2 (Heated Rivalry), 6 (The Long Game) and upcoming 7th book (Unrivaled - coming in September). It's pretty damn accurate to the books so I recommend giving the books a try after you watch this first season.

They start their professional careers in the 2010/2011 season actually. It’s not realistic but they don’t start playing in the league right after being drafted, they must go back to their junior teams, or perhaps the farm teams, and play in the world juniors again (international prospect tournament) in December 2009 where Canada wins. They start playing in the league the following October 2010.

Minimum Contracts for Rookie year back at this time 2009/10 Season was 500,000 with a high of 900,000. Typical signing bonus 10% of initial contract. 18 years olds (which they both are) are signed for three year deal. And of course performance bonus do exist. Since both are considered top tier talent, they should be near the top of that scale. For comparison NFL range was 315,000 a year but high going to 60 plus million (over 5 year contract with 40 plus guaranteed). So likely both would have made 7 figures technically in their first season between salary, signing bonus, and performance bonus goals (not counting agents cut of course). Characters are 17, at the start at the end of 2008, and are 18 when signing for the fake version of the NHL (in the books it's the NHL). So they start their professional careers for the 2009/10 season. They are usually fairly close to real life dates, but their fictional version of the World Juniors that they play in twice in this episode, occurs in December, They have it occurring before the start of the NHL season (it doesn't). And there is very little chance that after signing as Numbers 1 and 2 in the draft your team would allow you to compete in the juniors again, regardless if it happened before the season started.....

The other comments that I’m sure you’ll see a lot of are that Shane is undiagnosed but is on the autism spectrum, which explains some of his actions, like making the bed before working out or always folding his clothes while removing them. He also takes things literally and has a more of a flat affect. Also, Connor Storrie, the actor who plays Ilya is American, he grew up in Texas, and learned Russian for the role, like weeks before shooting began. It was a low budget tv show, roughly 3 million per episode and they filmed all six in a block in just over 30 days.

For the timeline, because it can get confusing, the show starts in December 2008 at the international prospect tournament (essentially the World Juniors) where Russia wins. We then jump 6 months to June 2009 where Ilya gets drafted #1 overall and Shane is drafted #2. We then jump another 6 months to December 2009 where they face off again in the World Juniors only Canada wins. Shane tells Ilya he’ll see him again in October, after the season starts, but Ilya orchestrates the commercial shoot for the summer 2010, which is why we skip another 6 months to June 2010, which is also their first hookup. The rest of episode 1 takes place in their rookie season which goes from October 2010 to April 2011. We leave off at the very beginning of the offseason in 2011. Also, not sure if anyone else has commented this but all the team logos are either tops or bottoms, they had a lot of fun with the designs and weren’t subtle. The Montreal Metros “M” looks like a bottom and the Boston Raiders cannon is pretty phallic.
