Oop, a gaming joke! Tick that one off your 2023 beany checklist, and shame on me for saying I’de never do another. Still, I’d like to think I bring a certainly quality (quality) to the gamer comic that genre that was otherwise missing. Go ahead and check off “David Wallace reference” while you’re at it as well. One unused idea I had was to have my ideal game turn out to be the same thing but with DFW’s face on the gun, who would periodically wax poetic about the mundane admirability of being a video game henchman, or deride the player for not turning off the game and reading a book. Dialogue-heavy games don’t have to be like this, provided the writing is good! Take a look at Perfect Tides, for example. The entire gameplay format only exists as a way to cram bits of text into every nook and cranny of the experience. Still, the DFW gun idea was dumb, both as a punchline, and as a game idea.
The game I went with I guess would be some kind of dungeon crawling deck builder (gotta deckbuild) with a Dark Soulsy aesthetic, I guess? Doesn’t really matter. If you look closely, the back of the main guy’s helmet is supposed to resemble a human face. That’s pretty nifty, I guess. There were much weirder helmet designs I workshopped, but they mostly just distracted from the readability of the joke. Oh well! DM me if you want to hire me to design fucked up helmets for your deckbuilding soulslike. Haha… but actually…
