The reason why they donโt remember what happened in the past is because the dragons tampered with their memories (the dragons themselves said so when we met them during Tartaros)

You can go back and watch in zeref backstory were they showed him studying in the accedemy, zeref had blueprints of both of them, ( the eclipse gate is also from the book of zeref) explaining why they sensed zeref curse, essence way back in GMG when lucy and rouge passed it ๐๐ป
