You were confused and asked what happened when Han Li got close to the mountains surrounded by fog. Wan Xiaoshan mentioned quickly that the "fog" is in reality a "formation." Formations are very relevant in Fanren. A formation is a system of runes, symbols, objects, or terrain-based configurations that, when activated, manipulate the flow of spiritual energy. Think of it like a spell that is set into the environment and can be activated under certain conditions. There can be naturally occurring formations, it's pretty esoteric, like mountains or trees growing in a very specific pattern ( i think it's based on Feng Shui) that then cause the environment to have a special effect. There's also man-made formations, most often in the form of flags that have to be stuck in the ground in a specific pattern to form a formation. No good Xianxia is complete without formations :)
