SOUND KAPITAL: DAMAGE

Part 4 of the ongoing series. The first bit covers how we wrote and recorded the song, the second (LONG) part goes into American Force Projection, imperialism, "red tagging" and How To Wreck A Country With One Simple Trick. I think this is the most thematically heavy episode of the series. Also: I am interrupted by a lawnmower. I promise they wont be all this Serious.

ALSO: I've got TWO guests lined up for some bonus episodes. Filmmaker Scott Coffey, who designed the cover and shot videos for HF and WP. We'll be talking about nudity, Portland and guerrilla movie shoots. I also have everyones favorite drummer ARLEN coming on to expand a little on how we recorded these albums and his time as HFs tour manager.

ALSO: In case anyone was worried that there would be no new music dropping this month...fear not. I've got a new song to share with everyone as well.

OK that's all for now.

Dan Boeckner, political science professor. You are missing a button up shirt to fit the role. 🥸 i love these videos so much!

Just wanted to say you genuinely did a great job distilling all that down. I’ve def had lecturers that weren’t that concise. I’ve a new appreciation for the song, too.

I’ve always felt that you (and Spencer) do a remarkable job delivering physically cathartic, intense performances while somehow recruiting energy from somewhere in your person to really sing. To execute the melodies and honor your role as a unique vocalist, all while jumping around all sweaty. For most performers I feel like the vocals suffer a lot more with less banging around. It seems like you must do some specialized type of conditioning or something.

I’m crazy about this Sound Kapital series. Everything about these stories and insights are brilliant.

Dude! You weren’t kidding! This was fantastic. Thank you. And nuts that Arlen was your tour manager for HF!!!

Damn. I remember pretty much everything about that show. I got struck down w an insane flu (which I hope I didn’t give to anyone) and the day after had just completely lost my voice. Couldn’t speak. We cancelled the next show and rolled out to New Orleans

So, speaking about reserving your vocal energy (about ten minutes in) reminds me the main Dan story I have. I’ve been blessed to see Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, and Operators live. Six years ago or so, I was with my wife at an Operators show in Deep Ellum (Dallas, Texas). Crossing the street, outside the show, before it started, I see Dan crossing the street. He has a white bag that seems to have some cold medicine in it. I don’t bother him with taking a picture or anything like that, but I just let him know I’m a big fan and follow all his projects. He was very kind, but we didn’t want to slow him down to getting settled before the show. So, show is amazing, and I end up loudly requesting “Bring Me the Head.” Someone in the crowd makes some apropos fellatio joke, as one does. Dan and the team hesitate but the crowd is excited and they oblige. I should have known it wasn’t the right night for it, but the performance was perfect, energy was amazing. Sadly, their show in Austin the next night was canceled. I think people often have an outsized sense of their own influence on events, but I always felt a little bit like that might have been my fault. 😂
