Batmouse / Flitterman

A quick and inky one today!

Did you know that the absolutely delightful old English word for "bat" that Tolkien uses in the Lay of Leithian, "flittermouse", is a total no-brainer for any German, because we still call bats "Fledermaus"? (It's one of the reasons why the name "Batman" was never translated into German in the old comics, though they made rather comical attempts at the likes of Catwoman ("Das Katzenweib", which to a German sounds awfully like "cat wench").

I thought the ear holes in the Nazgûl's hood were the cutest thing ever, but I was wrong. The bathood that includes the ears is even more adorable. (Probably shouldn't call Flittermouse 'adorable', but I can't help myself!)

I rather like 'Catwench'. In fact, I think there should be a Catwench. And also a Batwench, a rather feistier and possibly coarser character than Batgirl.

Very nice! Stern indeed!

"Fledermaus" is such a lovely word ! (Why didn't I learn German at school T.T)

Fledermaus is probably my favorite German word! (Admittedly, not that it has that much competition in my limited vocabulary - but I’m working on that). Danish ‘Flagermus’ is the same.

Liv Klein

Properly stern, this Flittermouse!:D
