โThen Fingon prince of Hithlum rode against him with archers on horseback, and hemmed him round with a ring of swift riders; and Glaurung could not endure their darts, being not yet come to his full armoury.โ
In case that, over all this pin madness, you've forgotten the Fingon and Maglor suggestion session: I didn't! This scene was suggested several times, and I really wanted to (re)draw it (the last time, I think, was in 1995).
I ws really scared of all those horseback archers! Then Lintie helped me out with a bunch of fantastic reference shots by people I then found on Instagram, who immediately allowed me to use their photos for this piece. So, a huge thanks goes to Freja Trulsdotter (@Artofliberty) and Erin Jardine (@eyesoferin) for allowing me to use their fantastic photos.
Glaurung is derived from the vision of Inger Edelfeldt, whose Glaurung looks like a bloated, disgusting lizard/crocodile. I think it's perfect. It owes something to Ilon Wikland's despiction of Katla as well, mostly those crazed eyes. Incidentally, is it just me or has this scene never been depicted with a properly flightless Glaurung? Edit: Oh! Of course it has, by our very own Ted Nasmith. :)
More incidentally, Jeremy, how would this be for the Beyond Bree calendar? ^___^
I used the Lazy Nezumi photoshop plugin for the lines here, and gosh, how have I ever drawn in PS without this? It feels like drawing on paper. No jitter, and total control. ๐
