Part 7
Click. The camera’s flash blinded her for a moment, leaving spots before her eyes. Sophia tensed up involuntarily as the photographer nodded and asked her to tilt her head slightly. She obediently followed his directions, mechanically recalling how to tilt her chin and maintain good posture. She was wearing a bright red blazer, which she had borrowed—like many other things—from Stephanie, bold lipstick, and earrings… How much had changed over these past months.
She had to learn how to do makeup so she wouldn’t look ridiculous. The first few weeks were a complete nightmare—smudged eyeshadow, uneven eyebrows, and countless mistakes. But over time, thanks to the internet and Stephanie’s help, she became skilled with the brushes. Sophia learned how to create clean eyeliner lines, apply lipstick precisely, and accentuate her eyes to make everything look as natural as possible, even though she still felt uneasy about it all inside.
Sophia barely suppressed a nervous sigh as she glanced at the photographer, who waved his hand, signaling that the shoot was over. He was absorbed in his work, paying her little attention. But Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that every time someone looked at her, it wasn’t just a glance—it was a judgment. A passport photo… What felt so crucial now seemed to push her further away from her former life. It was like another nail in the coffin of her old life as Jack. And that terrified her more than anything.
— Great, miss, all done. Your documents will be ready in a couple of days, — said the photographer with a slight smile, pulling her out of her thoughts.
Sophia nodded, thanked him, and turned around. In the doorway stood that guy from the authorities—Jason. He met her gaze with a smug smile, which immediately triggered a wave of disgust in Sophia. He lazily got up, brushed an invisible speck off his shoulder, and walked toward her, his eyes fixed on her face. That look… That same look again. As if he already owned her simply by virtue of helping her with the documents.
— Well, gorgeous, — he said with a mocking tone, — did everything go as planned?
Sophia forced herself to nod and put on the usual, practiced smile—the same one she always used whenever she had to deal with Jason and his stupid jokes. Inside, she was boiling with disgust, but she had long since learned to suppress those feelings, just to maintain some outward calm.
— Yes, everything went as planned, — she replied with a fake smile, hoping he wouldn’t notice the tension in her voice.
Part 8
Jason stepped closer, his hand sliding to her waist, pulling her a bit nearer than politeness would dictate. Sophia forced herself not to flinch as his grip on her waist tightened. She felt her body tense up but let out a nervous giggle, covering her mouth with her hand the way Stephanie had taught her, to mask her disgust. She had to seem playful and light, even though inside, everything burned with hatred for herself and the situation. Jason, of course, didn’t notice. To him, her giggle and “cute” behavior were just confirmation of his success.
‘Just don’t try to kiss me again,’ flashed through her mind. Every time she thought about their kisses, she felt sick. She couldn’t believe she’d agreed to this. But she needed to get through it—documents, a new identity, the apartment she no longer owned. All of it was complicated, considering that she had essentially become no one.
— You look absolutely stunning today, — Jason whispered in her ear, brushing his lips against it and licking them with his tongue. Sophia shuddered, trying to hide her irritation, but his hand had already slipped lower, gripping her butt, sending a strange rush of heat through her body. It infuriated her, causing her cheeks to flush, though luckily, the makeup concealed most of the redness.
— Thanks, — she forced out, trying to sound playful, even though his touch made her feel like she was about to turn inside out.
— Oh, come on, don’t be so serious, — Jason whispered in her ear again, squeezing her thigh and pulling her even closer. — I’m doing all this for you.
Sophia sighed, suppressing the emotions rising inside, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he wanted even more from her now. He had started with "innocent" kisses, fake concern, but now his hands and his behavior were getting bolder. Every time they met, she felt like their "deal" demanded more sacrifices from her.
— When will I get the documents? — she asked, trying to shift the conversation to a more business-like tone, but her voice trembled slightly. It frustrated her even more—feeling weak at such a moment.
Jason pulled back slightly, his expression still as smug as ever.
— In a couple of days, just like I promised, — he smirked. — Though you know this is illegal, — his eyes glinted with mischief, — but I’m doing it all for you, sweetheart. — he whispered, not breaking eye contact, squeezing her waist a little more.
Jason had no idea who she used to be. To him, Sophia was just an attractive woman who had “accidentally” ended up in a tough situation.
Part 9
— I hope this is really everything I need, — she said quietly, trying to pull away from Jason without showing hostility. But he wasn’t in a hurry to let her go.
— Well, that depends on what you mean, — Jason replied with a sly tone, winking. His fingers tightened slightly around her waist.
‘Damn it, Jake, what happened to you?’ she thought. Once, she would’ve responded to such arrogance with a punch to the face, but now… now she just forced herself to smile and stay calm.
— I’m talking about the documents, — Sophia said more firmly, trying to steer the conversation back to business. — The passport, the driver’s license. Everything we discussed. That needs to be finalized. — She emphasized the last sentence, though she knew Jason clearly wanted more.
He tilted his head slightly, his smile not fading:
— Yes, of course. Everything as agreed. In a couple of days, it’ll all be ready. But you know, — he paused, allowing himself to look her up and down, — the apartment, now that’s a different story. It’s a serious deal. You want it transferred to your name? It’s still under a certain Jack Carlson.
Sophia’s heart skipped a beat at the mention of "Jack Carlson." Soon, her passport would have a completely different name and photo—"Sophia Carlson." She had presented herself as a distant relative of Jack, to whom he had officially transferred everything in case he disappeared... Now it was just a matter of having those documents approved. Not too difficult for someone like Jason.
— Yes, the apartment, — she said quietly, gathering her strength. — I need it registered under my name. Sophia Carlson.
Jason looked at her with that same smug grin, which was becoming more irritating with each passing minute.
— Sophia Carlson, a distant relative, — he drawled, tilting his head slightly. — That’s funny. You’re so sure everyone will believe it? You think someone will buy that story?
Sophia forced a smile, knowing she had no other choice. The paperwork looked clean, and Jason himself had helped craft the story. He knew how to make sure the officials wouldn’t ask questions. The problem was that the price for his "help" was getting higher and higher.
— But you’re going to help me, right? — Sophia forced herself to smile playfully and, running her hand across Jason’s chest, tried to appear as confident as possible. This was the moment when everything inside her screamed to drop it and run, but she knew—there was no choice.
Jason, pleased with her compliance, glanced at her hand moving across his chest and smirked even wider.
Part 10
— Of course, sweetheart, — he drawled with smug confidence. — I’ll help you. After all, we’re so… close now, — his hand slid down her thigh, and Sophia nearly flinched but held herself together.
He leaned in slightly toward her ear and whispered, his voice insistent and commanding.
— But you understand I’ll need something in return, too.
— I... I didn’t want to rush, — Sophia exhaled softly, trying to make her voice sound gentle yet firm. Jason tensed slightly for a moment, clearly trying to figure out her meaning.
— Not rush? — he tilted his head, his gaze becoming more focused, with a note of impatience in his tone. — Sweetheart, we’re already far past that. And you know exactly what I’m waiting for.
— I know, Jason, — she whispered, her voice barely audible, and her gaze wavered despite her efforts to stay composed. — It’s just... this is serious. I don’t want to make any mistakes.
‘God, no... does it really have to come to sex?!’ Inside, she knew that Jason would no longer be satisfied with just her compliance and fake smiles. His demanding stare and tense tone made it clear—he wanted more, much more.
— It’s just... it’s serious, — she repeated, trying to hold herself together, stalling the inevitable.
Jason pulled back, his face twisting with irritation, and he flared up like a fire long held back.
— Serious?! Serious is me breaking the law and risking everything for you! — He stepped closer again, but this time, his smug grin was gone, replaced by raw anger. — I’m done playing the good guy. What more do you want?! — His voice grew louder and sharper, sending waves of fear through Sophia, though she fought to suppress it.
She hadn’t expected this reaction from him and froze for a moment, feeling a knot of dread tighten inside her. Jason was furious, and his rough, almost threatening demeanor had long since crossed a line. He stepped forward, nearly pressing her against the wall, and Sophia instinctively recoiled.
— I... I just... — Sophia’s voice trembled, her breathing unsteady. She could feel a level of fear she had never experienced before, wrapping itself around her.
— Just what? — his voice was laced with venom. He grabbed her wrist, squeezing it so tightly it hurt. — You think I don’t get what you need? I said I’d make it happen, but you’re acting like some untouchable! For God’s sake, Sophie, I really like you, but this is crossing all the lines! — Jason’s words came out fast, almost in a shout, his face contorted with frustration.
He stepped even closer, practically pinning her to the wall. She could feel his hot breath on her face, and in his eyes, she saw something wild, something unhinged.
Part 11
— You think you can just brush me off? — he continued, as if he hadn’t heard her weak attempts to object. — I’ve done so much for you, Sophia. The documents, the passport, this apartment... And you think I’m doing it out of the goodness of my heart? — Jason stepped forward, closing the distance between them even more, their faces now so close she could feel his hot breath on her skin. He tightened his grip on her wrist, preventing her from backing away. His face was twisted with anger and frustration, but suddenly, something else flashed in his eyes—an unexpected desire.
Sophia’s heart began to pound wildly. Jason yanked her closer, wrapping his arm around her waist, and without warning, crushed his lips against hers. It wasn’t a gentle kiss; it was rough, dominating, devoid of care or affection. He seemed to be taking what he believed was rightfully his.
Sophia froze, her body paralyzed with shock for a moment. Inside, everything screamed in horror and disgust, but fear had gripped her so tightly that she couldn’t resist right away. As her mind began to catch up, she tried to push him away, but Jason was too strong. Her head spun from the rush of adrenaline and panic.
Gathering all her courage, Sophia shoved his chest with all the strength she could muster, wrenching herself free from his grip. Gasping for air, she stepped back a few paces, her eyes wide, her breathing erratic, and her heart racing in her chest.
— Jason... — She couldn’t let this go any further. But... could she really risk ruining everything now? It was an incredibly difficult moment for her. Standing there, breathing heavily, her heart pounding, her thoughts in chaos, Sophia knew that if she stopped this now, if she refused him, everything might fall apart. But could she continue to endure this humiliation? Could she keep allowing Jason to have power over her body and her choices?
Sophia clenched her fists, feeling her nails dig into her palms. She had to pull herself together.
— Jason, — her voice was quieter now, but firmer. — I understand that you’ve done a lot for me. I know that without you, I wouldn’t have any of this. But… — she took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on his face, searching for even a trace of humanity in his eyes, — that doesn’t give you the right to decide what I have to do with myself. I’m grateful, but not so much that I’m willing to betray myself.
Jason stood silent, looking at her, lost in thought. It was clear his anger had shifted into something else. His breathing began to steady, but the tension still hung in the air. Sophia could see that he was trying to process her words, as if some invisible battle between rage and understanding was playing out in his mind. She held her breath, hoping that this would work.
Part 12
After several long seconds, Jason slowly loosened his grip on her wrist. His gaze softened, as if the cold logic had finally returned to his senses. He sighed heavily and stepped back.
— You’re serious… — he whispered, his voice much quieter now, almost defeated. — I really thought there could be something more between us.
Sophia exhaled, realizing that the tension was gradually subsiding. But inside, she was still torn by doubt and fear. She felt as though she was walking a fine line—between losing everything or managing to keep her independence.
— Jason, — her voice was gentle, but firm. — You’ve done a lot for me, and I can’t deny that. But you can’t make me feel like I owe you something I’m not ready for. That’s... not how this works.
He looked at her, disappointment evident in his eyes, but the cruelty that had flared up moments ago was gone. He took another step back, running his hand through his hair.
— Damn... — he muttered, with a nervous chuckle. — I messed this all up, didn’t I? I just... thought you wanted the same thing.
Sophia couldn’t suppress a weak smile, though the anxiety still gnawed at her from within. She stepped forward slightly, trying to strike a balance between understanding and firmness.
— Give me time, — Sophia said, trying to speak softly but with confidence. She could see Jason wavering, his emotions swinging between disappointment and embarrassment.
For a brief moment, Sophia felt a pang of regret in her heart. Seeing Jason lose his confidence, seeing the flicker of embarrassment and vulnerability in his eyes, she caught herself thinking, ‘Damn, I actually feel sorry for him.’ He had been so sure of his power over her, so certain he controlled the situation, that when that control began to slip, he looked lost—like a boy facing rejection for the first time.
She smirked inwardly, feeling the shift in power. Jason stood before her with a confused expression, and she suddenly realized that the balance had changed. Now he was the one unsure, the one who needed her approval, her decision. She allowed herself a brief smile but quickly hid it, not wanting to provoke a new outburst of anger.
‘Maybe I can live with this,’ she thought, feeling her nerves begin to settle.
