Magical Me Dresden Frame DIY

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few frames identical to the ones MinaLima used for their movie prop of Gilderoy Lockhart's Magical Me book cover.  Unfortunately these frames are very rare and I haven't been able to find any more of them.

Here is the Etsy shop that I purchased the frames from.  The listing is sold out.

The frames are made from a vintage relief used to emboss gold foiled paper.  The reliefs are old, most are probably in bad shape or have already broken apart.  I've searched for one of these reliefs for sale, but no luck there.  Pretty soon we won't see these frames at all anymore.

This is my attempt at preserving them in one form or another.

The files attached to this post can be used with your Cricut or other die cutting machine to (kind of) recreate the Dresden frame. There are two options.  You can print the scanned in frame and let your Cricut cut it out - but then you won't have the gold foil or embossing.  Alternatively, you can try embossing them by hand or with your Cricut following this great tutorial.

I set up some files that will help you follow the tutorial.  You will basically be using the "stencil" file to cut a stencil with your Cricut, then put a piece of gold foiled card stock over the stencil and let your Cricut emboss with the "score" file, then cut out the frame with the "final cut" file.

I know, that's a lot of steps... but it looks promising.  I tried it once but my Cricut Maker had trouble cutting all the little fine details of the stencil.  Basically, the cuts were so close to one another that it was impossible to weed out the bits of paper that needed to be removed.  I'm going to keep trying, maybe with a different material, or maybe cut by hand with my swivel blade. If I'm ever successful, I will definitely post a video tutorial.

Also, I would love to make a 3D file of the frame, 3D print it, and then use it as a relief to make more of the frames the traditional way. That is probably the best way to make sure these frames don't disappear from existence.  If anyone knows a good way to somehow convert a physical object into a 3D object, definitely let me know!

Enjoy these Patron-exclusive files, thank you guys for all your support, and let me know if you have any ideas or questions!

For those who want a little help with the frame, bigbox craft stores sell Tim Holtz ephemera which include aged gold frames.

Apparently they capture a lot of noise. Cleaning it up might be more work than creating a 3D model from scratch

Have you thought about using a 3D scanner to turn it into a 3D file for printing
