This whole backstory with Norah has a little bit of real life experience behind it. Of course, this is very different from what happened, but when I was in high school there was a girl, that was known as "the fat girl" in class. She was actually pretty cool, and she was attractive, but she just had always been overweight and was the target of a lot of fat jokes in class. 

One day in particular it was really quiet in class and someone passed gas, pretty loudly. I don't know if it was her, but one kid jumped up and said "ehhh gross that was ____ that farted!" the entire class erupted in laughter and she was embarrassed as hell. She sat a little while longer, but after people continued to laugh here and there and then they started to make fart noises with their mouths and blame her, AND with the teacher laughing too, she finally just got up and walked out of class and I guess went home for the day.   

She came back to school for the rest of the year, but occasionally someone would bring that up, or make fart noises and joke about it with her name attached. From that point, not only was she the "fat girl" in class, she was known as "the girl that farted in class" it was all anyone talked about when her name came up. People that weren't even in the class, were told by friends and it spread over the whole school. I talked to her normally and was friendly with her before and after, And she was very pretty and cool. But I hate to say, I was shallow enough to keep her at arms length just because I knew if i was friends, or God forbid had a crush on the "Fat Fart Girl" of the school, it would be the end of my social life in school.

She went to a different school the next year, and I never saw her again. I don't know if she transferred schools because of that incident, but I'm sure that didn't make her want to come back to school.

So I guess the moral is... ehh I don't know. That just always stuck in my head about how "farting" as natural of an occurrence as it is, if it's in the wrong setting, it can be such a crippling moment for someone socially. Maybe the times have changed, and high school kids don't suck as much as they used to.

But I just thought this would be a time in Norah's life that would be a huge turning point for her just because of the embarrassment she suffered on this day.
