Tax on pledges? Patreon changes
Added 2020-05-28 18:49:41 +0000 UTCSo on July 1st Patreon will be making some updates related to pledges. Depending on your location you may be charged a sales tax. This mainly affects US supporters (between 4% and 11% tax depending on state), but there are a bunch of other countries affected as well. If you live in the EU, then you are already subject to this tax for a few years now.
What gets taxed depends on what is offered in that specific tier. We only have the Pervader tier for now, and it is only used to give you Patreon posts and special access to the Discord server (Benefit type: Exclusive Community Access). I've updated the tier description to reflect this.
A few months later I plan on adding another higher tier which gives access to a distinct build of the game that has some extra side content, as well as delaying public builds one month (Benefit type: Downloadable Digital Goods). At that point, the tax changes should become more prevalent. I'm not at all gifted in the way of accounting, so I'm really not sure how this is going to pan out. This is just a heads-up.
If it will be possible, I would like to make it so that when you pledge $5, then only $5 leaves your bank account, though apparently this wouldn't work out in the US. We'll just have to wait and see what kind of tools Patreon gives us to streamline this stuff.
