Resin printing - Not as easy with heavy objects (working with supports)

Been resin printing for almost 2 years now and printing large and heavy is always a struggle. When you mostly print small this issue doesn’t come up as often. But when you need to print objects like masks you need to think about supports in a totally different manner.

I went to town on supports on this one, mixing both heavy supports which are inside and medium supports for the outer area. I have mostly had fails where none of the print sticks but finally having some success.

As you can see it gave out on the outside where I didn’t add enough supports on the outer structure. So I was relying on the auto supports from chitubox and adding my own but unsure if that’s the best method. Going to work on completely adding my own supports without relying on the auto supports so much.

Just happy the supports in the front worked. Will go over the final print, see which are the problem areas and change the support system to have a better coverage.

On other printing news, this head will be ready to use soon 😊 this one is being printed on my FDM printer.

Edit:

Print did not make it but wanted to show how and where it failed. The supports gave out meaning I need to be smarter with placement.

Going to set it up again and start the print all over again 💪🏽 better supports this time.

I did rotate this next print to the smallest area so it goes from there. Doing it slow, usually do it slow on my FDMs too since I rather it just work. What’s your exposure time usually per layer?

Oh I’m testing everything from a lot of supports to messing with the exposure to see what works best. Had a lot of issues with this printer as a whole so rather poke at everything and see what works for what I need. Since I print minis on my other printer it’s not an issue and use very few supports. Large heavy prints that don’t have flat spots are something I’m learning still.

that is a LOT of support- for heavy stuff, something that helps a lot is just slowing down the lift step and adding a little extra time to the exposure. If your printer is big enough, adjusting the angle can help, too. Having too much of the model trying to peel off the FEP at the same. Like you want to go through the previewer and make sure there aren't any layers with big solid chunks. as a general statement the auto-supports are just.. bad, they're okay for a prototype where you don't care as much about quality, but most of the time you will need to manually do them (there's a lot of really good guides to it from people who do miniatures like 3DPrintingPro on youtube) there are also resins that are specifically for larger prints (although I haven't used them)
