I have always loved how domed eyes look on Disney mascots so I wanted to start creating a better eye for myself. There are a few things I really don't enjoy about making when it comes to eyes so decided to make my life easier by approaching it this way. I want to step away from the flat plastic eyes and start moving over to the rounder more lively eye so why not print it.

When the eye is domed it has a better profile, the eyelids are actually 3D instead of flat felt that looks like an afterthought. Overall the eyes look livelier more like a real life cartoon. I left a bit of space where the eyelid goes to be able to glue fleece after the eye has been printed.

Being able to fit the eyes well is possible because the head design was made in 3D. So I was able to sculpt directly onto the head without a worry of the eyes not fitting.

The eye itself will not be as thick as these test ones, so ignore how thick it is around the cut out of the eye as it will be much thinner later on.

The idea is you will be able to glue this on either at the foam stage or after the head has been furred. The way these were designed I wanted to be able to glue after the head had been furred. You will see what I mean with the fleeced eyelid.

The fleece was rolled over a bit to avoid the raw edge and glued on to the eyelid itself. The results were better than expected.

So where do I go from here? I clean up the 3d model, thin out the lip around the eye which will be black. Detach the white area of the eye (which is currently gray) as the eye will have at least 2 parts to it. Next print should be all the parts I need to assemble separately so I can cast the parts in regular resin. A lot of experimenting going on with this eye but pretty happy with the overall idea and result.
Will continue posting progress as soon as I have more to show.
