The Scholar Class, 3rd Draft

Hello there patrons!

Presented here is the 3rd Draft of the Scholar class. It includes the Culinarian, Physician, Ritualist, and Tactician. Fans of the Diplomat and Theologian, don't worry, I'm cycling out which archetypes are in each draft just to keep the class digestible for people who want to provide feedback.

I feel like I'm closing in on the final version of the class and expect to start hiring artists soon so if you've been holding back on feedback, now's the time to share it!

Thanks,

Benjamin

You're definitely right. A little sidebar like that would be great and I have plenty of ideas!

It is intentional that you can analyze multiple enemies. Since the bonus damage from AE only applies to weapon attacks I think that limits how useful it would be to a ritualist or any other spellcaster. As for Extra Attacks, since you have to be a 5th level Scholar to even get the damage bonus from the feature I think it's probably alright. Especially since you'd have to attack multiple targets and that's almost always worse (strategically speaking) than burning down one enemy at a time. I think Critical Analysis Bonus was overthinking it and probably unnecessary to balance the class. We'll see what people say when this gets another round of public feedback but I'm not currently too concerned about multiclass abuse. And yeah, I agree, I never quite got the implementation right on Critical Anslysis either. The column stayed in the class table completely on accident. There must be a better way to phrase that bullet point. I will implement different language before the next public draft.

I love this class. A couple of things I noticed, though. Is it intentional that analyze enemy can be used against multiple enemies? Turn 1, bonus action enemy 1 and have bonus damage against it for a minute. Turn 2, do the same against a second enemy. This could create unintended additional damage abilities if the character gains AOE or multiattack options (like a ritualist grabbing a multi-target cantrip like Eldritch Blast). Sage advice is back to saying it uses proficiency bonus. I thought you wanted to separate the two? If you leave it at proficiency bonus, I think you no longer need the Critical Analysis column on the chart. It was always mildly confusing since you didn’t clearly introduce and consistently use that term within the feature and other features anyway. Page 3, right column, line 4 should read: “scholar level, and it gains one benefit of your choice based”. Note the movement of the comma and the addition of the word “it”. Also consider saying “one of the following benefits” so it’s perfectly clear what the following bullet points are and the audience is anticipating them. The second bullet point in that same feature, about gaining +1, is confusing. It took me several read-throughs last time to figure it out, and even having figured it out then I was thrown off the first time I read it now. I don’t have any suggestions for revision that don’t involve making multiple sentences and throwing off the parallelism of the three bullet points, but that could be done.

Love it! Looks great to me, and I'm hoping to get to play one soon. Only minor comment is with the Culinarian Combat Craft ability "hidden attributes determined by DM", I'd recommend a sidebar or some such just giving some advice and a few possible examples to help DMs get the general idea.
