I know you are already well into season 3 but this Stannis propaganda must be stopped! 😅 The island fortress of Dragonstone was the original seat of power. All the islands and lands around it swore fealty to them and were fiercely loyal. Especially the Velaryons, who you will meet in House of the Dragon. Renly was a boy less than 10 years old, so he couldn't hold Dragonstone. Robert needed a string leader to stop any rebellion in the area, so he picked Stannis.
