2025-05-04 03:03:06 +0000 UTCThis performance is how I was introduced to K-Pop. I first saw Coldplay in 2002 with my friend at a tiny club called Bimbo’s in San Francisco. It was a concert that you could only attend by winning tickets from a radio station. The only cost was that you had to bring a teddy bear to donate to children. I won tickets and took my friend who I have known since we were 11. We are both music lovers and huge fans of Coldplay…and live music. I think we have seen them live over a dozen times now! (many of those times were when concerts were a LOT cheaper!). About 5 or six years ago, my friend was going through a really difficult period in her life. BTS, like they do with many people, found her when she needed them most. For about a year, she didn’t share this love that she had with anyone else. She knew that I wouldn’t judge her, but there is this stigma in the US about people, especially older women, listening to “boy bands”, so she kept it to herself for a while. After about a year, I was visiting her at home when she turned the tv on and said, “I want to show you something, but you have to keep an open mind”. She put on this performance. At the first sound of Jungkook’s voice, I had goosebumps…by the time Jimin sang his first note, tears were streaming. It was the start of a beautiful journey. For about the first year or so, it was all things BTS for me. Along the way, I have learned just how similar Coldplay and BTS are in their values and the way that they want to heal the world. I feel so lucky to have been able to see BTS 2 of the days in LA for the PTD tour. They were both such surreal experiences. I have since expanded my listening to many other Korean groups like The Rose, Epik High, Stray Kids, and especially Ateez. I am so thankful that I live in an area where many groups come through on their tours. Music really is life…and it transcends language. Each of these concerts was a magical experience that has improved my life. I can’t even imagine not listening to these amazing groups, now…and it all started from this performance of Fix You.
