Chapter 147: Super Magic—Want to Learn!

"So light magic can be this powerful!"

George couldn't help but marvel as he watched Makarov hold his own against Jose using only light magic, without relying on his signature Giant Magic.

At first, George had dismissed light magic as underwhelming in attack power. Its defensive potential, enhanced by the Three Pillar Gods technique, was decent, but offensively, it seemed weak.

That's why he rarely used light magic in combat.

But seeing Makarov wielding light magic so masterfully today made George realize it wasn't the magic itself that was lacking—it was his own understanding. He hadn't yet mastered advanced offensive light magic techniques.

Each spell Makarov cast felt capable of demolishing a hundred-meter-tall mountain.

While George was awestruck by the battle between two of the Ten Wizard Saints, the fight on the ground below had also grown intense. Erza, Natsu, and Gray had engaged the three Elemental Users from the Phantom Lord Guild.

The aerial battle raged fiercely, with no clear victor in sight, but George was confident in Makarov's chances of winning. After all, Makarov hadn't even used his Giant Magic yet.

Shifting his focus to the ground fight, George observed Erza leading Natsu and Gray against the Phantom's elemental trio. He figured their chances of victory were slim and considered stepping in to help.

Though he couldn't match S-class wizards in direct combat, his vast repertoire of supportive magic could be invaluable.

But as the battle unfolded, George began to feel his intervention might not be necessary.

"Is this Phantom's S-class team a bit... underwhelming?"

He noticed that even though Natsu and Gray weren't S-class wizards, they managed to hold their ground against Totomaru and Juvia. They were being pressured, but the fights were surprisingly close.

Meanwhile, Erza's battle against Sol didn't even seem like a contest. Without switching armors, she had forced Sol to rely on transforming into sand to evade her attacks. Sol's rock-based offensive magic posed no threat—Erza shattered each attack with a single swing of her sword.

Later, Sol attempted a psychological attack by conjuring illusions of a blue-haired man and some children from Erza's memories. This briefly threw her off balance, but even so, Sol could only manage to avoid outright defeat and never posed a real threat to her.

"The difficulty of tasks S-class wizards face is much higher, so for safety reasons, our guild's S-class trials are far stricter," Mirajane explained softly when she noticed George's confusion.

"In fact, with their current strength, Natsu and Gray would already qualify as S-class wizards in most other guilds. But don't tell them! The Master doesn't want them getting complacent."

"No wonder..."

George nodded in understanding.

It now made sense why Makarov was so confident in defeating Phantom's master, Jose. At the highest level, Fairy Tail's strength matched or exceeded that of Phantom.

Makarov was stronger than Jose. Natsu and Gray could match Phantom's S-class wizards, while Erza alone was worth several of them.

When factoring in other powerhouses like Laxus and Mystogan—who were on par with or stronger than Erza—plus Gildarts, whose strength rivaled the Master's and who was away on a century-long quest, it was clear why Fairy Tail was considered the Kingdom's top guild.

Sure enough, it didn't take long for the ground battle to conclude.

The first to finish was Erza, who quickly overcame Sol's psychological attack and defeated him with a single strike.

Natsu and Gray followed soon after, defeating their respective opponents almost simultaneously.

But George felt an uneasy tension rising. One of the Elemental Users, their strongest member, had yet to appear.

It didn't make sense for Phantom to leave their most powerful asset out of such an important operation.

"Now that the kids are done, it's time I wrap this up."

From above, Makarov surveyed the now-resolved ground battle and ceased his assault on Jose. Towering over him, he declared, "Kneel and surrender, Jose. I'll count to three—this is your last chance!"

Makarov had been capable of defeating Jose instantly from the start. However, he had deliberately prolonged the battle to give the younger wizards a rare opportunity to grow through combat.

After all, such experiences were invaluable.

"Are you joking, Makarov?" Jose laughed angrily, his magic surging violently. "We're evenly matched in strength! And if it's ruthlessness you're talking about, I surpass you by far. You should be the one kneeling!"

"Soul Devour!"

Jose unleashed his most powerful dark magic, summoning two massive black phantoms designed to consume his opponent's soul.

"One... Two... Three."

Makarov finished his count. Seeing Jose's refusal to yield, he clasped his hands together. A colossal light magic circle, large enough to envelop an entire city, appeared above him.

Even before the spell activated, the immense holy energy radiating from Makarov's magic instantly purified the two black phantoms.

"What the heck is this magic?!"

George, watching from below, couldn't help but curse in astonishment at the sight of the massive light magic circle dominating the sky.

He wasn't the only one shocked. Natsu, Gray, and the rest of the Fairy Tail members on the first floor stared in awe, clearly unfamiliar with the spell Makarov was about to unleash.

"This is the Master's ultimate magic," Mirajane explained with a smile. "Created by our guild's first master, it uses holy light to punish darkness. It targets only those the caster considers enemies. It's a legendary, one-of-a-kind super magic—Fairy Law!"

"Light-element super magic, Fairy Law. I want to learn it!"

George felt grateful that he had prioritized studying light magic, building a solid foundation. Now he understood why Makarov had chosen to master light magic—it was to carry on the legacy of the first Master's super magic.

"Master, watch out!"

Just as everyone was marveling at the impending display of Fairy Law, a green-clad figure with tear-streaked cheeks and a blindfold appeared behind Makarov.

"So sad, so tragic. At last, an opening. Void Field: Annihilation!"

The figure clapped his hands together, activating a unique magic circle. Makarov's expression changed immediately as his magic power rapidly dissipated, and the colossal light magic circle above the city vanished.

"Damn it! I was careless!"

Makarov cursed himself for overlooking the hidden mage. Had he not let his guard down, such an opponent wouldn't have stood a chance against him.

"Kill him!"

Terrified by the uncast Fairy Law, Jose screamed desperately. Makarov's magic had been too overwhelming—he couldn't afford to let him live.
