I’m so glad you guys watched this one, this is one of my al time favorite movies of Keanu ever. He’s always been my Hollywood crush since I was literally 7 years old ☺️ the religious aspect of this film is what drew me in the first time I watched it all those years ago. I’ve always had a fascination for the darker and paranormal horror side of entertainment, this just combines my favorite actor with my favorite genre 🖤

I'm 95% sure I gave this religious info on a different reaction of yours, but I can't recall where. So you get it again. Congratulations! Oak specifically addressed how the movie commented on the "transactional" nature of John's actions, and how he was fighting evil for the sake of his own salvation and not because he actually cared about doing good or protecting people. That's a big part of the Christian theology of the film like you noted. Other religions have very different perspectives on sin and "good deeds", and how your motivations matter much less than the actual impact on the world. There's a classic Jewish story about a rich man who goes to speak with a rabbi: The rich man says that he wants to do something good with his money, so he has decided to build an orphanage. The rabbi congratulates him, and says that this is a wonderful idea and he will get much applause and praise from the community. A few days later the rabbi bumps into the rich man and asks how the orphanage is coming along. Here the rich man says that he thought about it, and he realized that the only reason he was going to build the orphanage was for the praise and accolades. Since he didn't have truly righteous intentions, he decided not to do it. To which the rabbi responded "You think the orphans care WHY you did it? Build the orphanage!" The WHY matters much less than the fact that you DID IT.

AFAIK this was very much Keanu and the directors version of Constantine. If you want a version of him a little closer to the comics, you should check out the DC Animated Movie Constantine: City of Demons (2018). That's an easy enough to pick up one of, and a nice introduction to the greater DCAU (DC Animated Universe).
