Keanu Reeves have confirmed that the sequel has recently been greenlit as of this year with the same director

Emmett Laughlin

Answer: “it clearly said spoilers ahead!” Oak: “…and you just kept on reading” I’ll never get tired of their chemistry 🤣

Dominic

This movie does deserve a rewatch on your own time. I think your scores will definitely jump a bit. I disagree about the criticism on Keanu's acting. It may not have been the comic book's interpretation of it granted that John Constantine is a Brit, but they had a vision for the character and went for it, and I thought Keanu's acting of him was convincing. As to the gaps, I just think they didn't want to get too much exposition. Since there's a mystical element, they just had to tie the cause and effect. They just drop bits like water being a conduit, cat's eyes, etc. and expect the audience to just follow along, 'cause they really didn't need to explain all that, just the objective.

Bartimaeus

They are making a sequel currently!

Corinne Smith

I've already acknowledged that I know it's a corruption of Christian ideology: that's why I think it's a terrible movie. If you watched a movie based on corrupting Buddhist ideals and a Buddhist got up and said "actually here's what we really believe" you wouldn't object to that at all, would you? How about Native Americans, or African beliefs? The objection only ever comes when Christians want to stop the misconceptions. I know it's hard for you, but try and have a little grace. You wouldn't appreciate someone misrepresenting and demeaning your beliefs. I'm not going into every comment here and posting this, I'm sticking to my own and not bothering anyone. I have a right to clear up incorrect information just like you have a right to not participate if you don't like to hear it, right?

Marco Gutierrez

This isn’t supposed to be a Christian film dude lol, it’s a film of a comic book who made the rules in their universe. Leave it to the hardcore Christians to never let the religion go in anything and try to ruin it for others 💔

Great to see you, Diamond Dave! Thanks for all of the hard work

Thea is for reacting to this one. I really enjoy this movie. It may not be “the best movie ever made” but I find it mesmerizing. Constantine is a great character and I like that he’s not the kind of “superhero” we see in other movies. I’ve watched it a number of times and I’m always completely engaged. I get so excited when I see someone react to it. The film never got the love it deserved. The cast for the movie is so fun! I love Tilda Swinton in every role she’s ever done. I think she was perfect for Gabriel. And Gavin Rossdale! Who would have expected that?! Of course Keanu, Rachel, Shia, Djimon, and Pruitt Taylor Vince! I laughed when Mason said Pruitt would make a great bad guy. There’s an obscure low-budget horror film called Fear (1990). It’s not the one with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. It stars Ally Sheedy (remember the brat pack?) and Pruitt plays the bad guy. I watched it at like 2am one night many years ago, knowing nothing about it. I was just trying to fall asleep and watching whatever was on cable. It scared the s**t out of me! I’m a wuss when it comes to horror films - though I’ve seen The Exorcist many times and love it. And maybe I was just in a weird head space at the time, but there was no way I was going to sleep after that! I never watched it again, so I don’t know if it would have the same impact now (I remember one scene being really cringy). But I couldn’t watch Pruitt in anything for a really long time after that. And Ally Sheedy is certainly not known for her acting skills, but check her out in High Art (1998). You might be really surprised.

This movie embodies the tag of a cult classic like few others. Liked by some on arrival, not a hit by any means, but over the years gradually seeped its way into the hearts of many. I was only 9 when it came out so wasn't allowed to see it even though it had one of my - at the time and still is - fav actors starring in it. I loved the visual worldbuilding and the spooky, gothic, punk atmosphere it created. It didn't rely on exposition and relayed the story through dialogue that felt natural and chilling. I completely agree with Oak that the deadpan delivery of Keanu Reeves' Constantine showcases the stark contrast against that of Rachel Weisz' Angela. I will be the first to admit that Reeves' isn't the most versatile actor but his style matches very much with how I always envisioned John Constantine to be. That cheeky, dry sense of humor, sometimes self deprecating and often nonchalant and smug. The cinematography and the lighting made every still a visual treat. I loved rewatching it for the 16th time with you guys and as always, also loved hearing your reviews.

Kalkent

Okay since you asked! the character John Constantine is actually portrayed by another actor named Matt Ryan who appeared in the CW Arrow-verse shows. He did it SO well they gave him his OWN live action Constantine show (worth watching) and used his voice and likeness for the animated movies! With all due respect to Keanu, Matt Ryan plays the character right out of the comics and his casting has been compared to RDJ for Tony Stark.

Alexander Alayon Jr

If you guys like the character this actor named Matt Ryan plays him in the arrowverse. He appears in Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, even has his own show Constantine. He also plays him in animated series and films. While I absolutely love Keanu and this movie which I’ve seen countless times, in my opinion Matt Ryan is a way better Constantine than Keanu.

privatedadbod

The director and Keanu just recently did a podcast episode for the 20th anniversary (Happy, Sad, Confused hosted by Josh Horowitz) and they talk about a lot of the things you guys were asking about. My favorite facts were 1) a few seconds on earth could feel like two lifetimes in hell and the director purposefully chose to have one of the first scenes set there to take place in a wasteland of the 405 (I've been stuck in standstill traffic for almost an hour before). 2) the movie was originally written and filmed as a pg-13 movie, but once it went up for a rating it immediately received an R rating because it dealt with demonic themes despite following pg-13 standards.

Jade Lastra

the joke of the bathtub scene is that he's not doing a whole ritual to send her to hell or give her the ability back. he's literally just drowning her so she dies and comes back like he did

tom

I wasn't being disrespectful about it lol. Saying that something is wrong when it objectively is isn't disrespectful. Like I said, I get that you like it and that's fine. My criticism was of its butchering of Christian theology and perpetuating a number of myths about it. This is objectively true, I can point to several Bible passages that disprove what this film tries to portray. I'm not here to hijack the comment section into a discussion on theology, I'm just leaving my thoughts about the movie and why I think it's bad since I'd never seen it before. Have a good day.

Marco Gutierrez

Except it's not valid. Obviously, we come from very different backgrounds and understand the concept of the film also differently. It pains me but I'm going to have to pull the agree to disagree. It's fine to give valid criticism. Please just me respectful about it.

Amber

Except that ISN'T the point of the movie. He still buys his salvation through his sacrifice. "Gabriel" even says so. The world IS black and white, good and evil, according to Christian theology which is what this story concept steals from. The only shades of gray that exist are people trying to convince themselves that something evil is actually good. There isn't a single thing ANY of us can do to get into heaven. Go read John 14:6 - nobody gets into heaven except through Jesus. At no point in this movie does Constantine out his faith in Jesus. In fact the only time I even see Him mentioned is when people blaspheme against him. It's perfectly fine if you like this movie, I found it rather bland. But you should be able to accept valid criticism when it's given. I know it goes against modern popular thought, but someone not liking something that you like isn't a personal attack on you.

Marco Gutierrez

Haters gonna hate..... This is a fabulous movie. Just read the other comments here. I'm sorry that you couldn't see the creativity and interesting ideas they portray about how different people view the world from all different perspectives. And the whole "you can't buy your way into heaven", that's the whole point of the damn movie! Religion sometimes paints this idea of the world that it's black and white, good and evil, when actually, it's mostly just a big grey area. And Constantine only lives within that grey area. So it makes sense that he doesn't get why he's not getting into heaven. Like Gabriel said. "No, you know. There's a difference." He has to put in the work. He has to play the game. "You can do all the good things you want, but that does not erase the bad things you've done. Imagine if our justice system let off murderers and thieves cause they've donated enough money to charity or helped enough people. That'd be terrible." You are absolutely right....which is EXACTLY WHY he wasn't getting into heaven until he made the final sacrifice! So I don't understand your reasoning here; you're writing like the film did the opposite and let him into heaven because of his selfishly good deeds. I am very confused by your response. Did we watch the same movie? And about the final bit regarding theology, I promise you that no one is going to this movie to try to understand Christianity better. That would be like someone watching National Treasure to learn more about American history. None of NT has even a kernel of truth or even makes sense half the time, but damn if it's not entertaining! Or, if you're saying that "if this is how you view Christianity, then go read the Bible".....hmmm....odd choice seeing as everyone can view religion and whatever they think of as God or a higher power any way they want! Even Christians can't agree on it. That's why there are so many different sects of Christianity! I really am not trying to come from a mean place, but when you ruthlessly rip apart and drag through the mud a film that quite a lot of other people like - this movie has been getting a lot of other reaction videos done on it, most of it ending with very good reception, and there has been A LOT of buzz recently about a part 2 and people are really excited - simply because you happen to see the world differently than the film portrayed it.....bull, horns. Don't get me wrong, there are a few popular films that I don't enjoy and speak on it but I try to do so in a respectful tone. Read the room.

Amber

I love love love LOVE this movie, glad you guys watched it!!

Giselle Hernandez Torres

Wow it's crazy how many people are Reacting to this lately.. i just seen The Media Knights, Asia and BJ and a couple others recently do this classic gem.

Mister Lou

Agreed

Isaac Spencer

You're right, it's a part of the Arrowverse and bridges on to Lucifer on occasion, and its a pretty fun show! BTW I would love for them to react to Arrow if they haven't seen it yet by some chance!

Errolowl

I never got around to watching this one cause it didn't seem all that interesting though I'd heard lots of good things. I should have just listened to my gut and kept avoiding it. I won't say it's terrible, but it's certainly not good by any stretch of the imagination. The only redeeming factors I saw in it were Shia And Peter Stormare. Leave it to the entertainment industry to just take what they want from Christianity, butcher it, and then mix it in with a bunch of flawed theology. And yes, I know that this is based on the comics and the comics are probably wrong too, my point still stands. There's so much irony in them taking the Lord's name in vain so much in this movie. Not to mention the absolute foolishness of trying to work your way into heaven, when it's extremely clear to anyone that's read the Bible that you cannot earn your way into heaven. You can do all the good things you want, but that does not erase the bad things you've done. Imagine if our justice system let off murderers and thieves cause they've donated enough money to charity or helped enough people. That'd be terrible. I know that this isn't about theology, but as Oak said the movie is kind of hinging on this premise so I'm going to poke holes in it when it's this monumentlsly stupid. I urge anyone who finds their understanding of Christianity to align with what this movie portrays to pick up a Bible and ask God for some answers.

Marco Gutierrez

Hush is amazing

Bluhawke

Green can be life, definitely, but also sickness/poison. I had the thought that Constantine is standing there, facing sickness. But I like your take better about seeing and unseeing.

Kirstine Aaen

Speaking of Mike Flanaghan, I would love for you guys to react to two of his movies, 'Hush' and 'Gerald's Game.'

Megan Schnese

This is one of my favorite Keanu films. For me the special effects hold up. I saw this when it came out and it still holds my attention. I would totally watch a sequel. Great reaction. Thanks.

Shirlene Wright

I'm not sure about Arrow but I do know it's part of the Lucifer (fox tv show) universe. And the show Constantine is supposed to be more closely to comic book Constantine.

Megan

So I remember when I saw this as a kid, being confused that Rachel plays twins until a bit way in. As for the guy in the beginning whose hair went gray, it's because he was that scared. Also, Michelle Monaghan was originally part of the movie, I think she was a half breed John loved. But then they ended up cutting out all of her scenes but the brief holy water sprinkler scene. Don't know the exact reasoning behind her removal because I believe all her scenes had been filmed, but I heard it's because they decided they wanted Constantine to be alone and lonely. So it was weird to have her make a "random" cameo for that scene.

Megan

When this movie released it didn’t get good reception, I’ve always liked it even before I knew it was DC comics (missed the beginning lmao) so I was so confused on why people didn’t like it, this movie for a while was forgotten tbh… but out of nowhere there was this huge following of the movie being very vocal about it and that’s where the whole Constantine 2 convo sparked, been waiting for a long time for a confirmation release date… *BTW I DIDNT SEE THIS MOVIE WHEN IT CAME OUT, IT WAS LIKE A DECADE AGO AND IM JUST GOING OFF OF WHAT I HEARD*

Jigglenuts3000

There is Constantine TV series. I think it's connected to CW Arrowverse. Since he's a cameo once in Arrow. but I could be wrong.

Fajar Kurniawan

YES! Does not matter it's midnight here, can't wait to see y'all's reactions to this masterpiece <3

Kirstine Aaen

Re: Angie standing behind the green glass in the loft--ive always assumed the color didn't matter, the point with both of those shots was that she was obscured (couldn't 'see') and was trying to move into clarity ('seeing'). But idk if there's a more official answer on that. Edit: green traditionally symbolizes life, and she had to get close to death to reawakened her ability 🤷‍♀️

Bluhawke

I was complete surprised by this movie when I first saw it - totally loved it and still do. The world, lore, story and characters had me hooked completely. And Peter Stromare's unhinged portrayal as the devil was so unlike anything I had seen before and I loved it. Keanu said this was the one movie character he would love to come back to and now, finally, we will get a sequel. 🤘😁

Paul Yu (BlehBlarghBlah)

Omg best news. Can't wait to see in cinema!

Lisa - Marie

Yet... But officially there will be one coming now!

Paul Yu (BlehBlarghBlah)

Constantine 2 has been confirmed! Finally!

Paul Yu (BlehBlarghBlah)

Love this movie. Appearances aside--comic Constantine is blond & British (the TV show that came out a couple years ago is closer)--this isn't a terrible representation of the character, imo. Most of the Vertigo publications are darker, more adult (V for Vendetta, anyone?), so I enjoyed the grim, pessimistic Constantine in this portrayal. The way the character appears in the Sandman series is kind of a hybrid of the two, to me. A little cheekier like the CW show, but just as abrasive as the movie portrayal.

Bluhawke

I only know about this character because a version of the character appeared on Arrow then got his own spin-off. PS: Gotta watch HOLES soon since Shia keeps popping up in movies. It's a sign.

Ron Banks

Yeah looks like it - keanu from what I heard wanted to make sure that they got the story right if did another one and for years him and the director of this one have talked through the comics and I'm sure read have story idea butbj haven't looked to see if anything since then been announced

Lisa - Marie

Heck yeah young Keanu, this makes me wanna watch Point Break

Pyro2475

I feel like I always agree with Diamond Dave haha

Liam

Most young ppl now know Keanu for John Wick, but THIS movie was my introduction to the legend that is Keanu Reeves. I still remember being a kid & having a blast at the movies with this movie. 😊 Glad ya’ll chose this for a reaction!

Esmi

It deserves a follow up. Which looks like we may get?

Badd Medicine

🤜🤛

Badd Medicine

This is in my top 3 Keanu movies - love this movie, they were meant to do a sequel and never happened....yet anyway

Lisa - Marie

This is one of my all-time favourite Keanu Reeves films. I still remember seeing it in the cinema. It's a shame they haven't released a sequel yet. I was about to go to bed, but you can't miss it!!! Thank you!

Alina B

Yes! going to start watching this right now!

Paul Yu (BlehBlarghBlah)

Bah! I have to wait for Jason to finish work before we watch. Gonna be a long 5 hours. 🤣
