Totally is. And I'll look into that patreon 👀

Alexiani Gollarza

Recently rewatched it on the Patreon page of another reaction channel I subscribe to (CineBinge), and forgot just how much I enjoy that movie. Definitely agree, it's pretty damned great.

Jeff K

Agree with literally every single point in your comment.

Jeff K

This is a first-time watch for me, too. Not to bring politics into this, but the current state of our country is scary. We have a President who pushes racist rhetoric against minorities, we have people in power who would love to see the Civil Rights Act to be repealed. Oak is right, we aren't far removed from the terrible shit that went on in the Jim Crow era, and It's hard to think that there was ever a time in this country when we segregated people based on their skin color. It's stupid, ridiculous, and honestly, I fear we have a possibility of turning the clocks back. That's not to say there still isn't racism, because there is...a lot of it. It makes me upset that we have a President who enables that hate once again. Don't usually try to bring politics into this kind of stuff, but I I think it's important to think about as well.

Plebcy

hidden figures next, pleaseeeeeeeeee

vertebra

It really is🔥

Alexiani Gollarza

I had no idea the Ashley Johnson was in this, she's the voice actor of ellie in the last of us game and ellie's mother in the last of us tv show.

Rajat Kumar

Such a good movie!

Rajat Kumar

At the end when Oak is talking about people just going along and with the flow that’s kind of the whole point in my opinion of telling this story. Through out the movie you just see racism and prejudice throughout. I mean it’s just in dialogue like Aibileen saying her grandmother was a slave. Another women saying the family she worked for acted like they owned her when she is a free woman. Aibileen mentions that a black woman got arrested for going to vote even though by this time the 19th amendment allowed her to vote they would just put up obstacles for especially black women. It’s in the way Skeeter says thank you to many black service workers but the other women don’t say anything or give her a weird pause before moving on, that Skeeter and also Celia live on plantations. The fact that the maids can be dirty and can carry diseases but can cook their food, clean their homes, take care of their children. The best part about this movie is showing you this is what it’s like day to day. That racism isn’t just simply hating someone for the color of their skin but also the laws in place, the jobs you can have, the way people treat you. This movie is so great because people who were alive at the time are alive and well today and we watch this and are discussed by their action but these same people are in our society today living and working, people’s coworkers, bosses even someone’s friends but they are racist and don’t believe themselves to be so. I mean Hilly literally says there are some real racists around here and she’s not one, but she is. In my option this movie is great at showing us that civil rights, prejudice and racism is homegrown and woven into everyday life.

Jae

Jurassic World also

Shannon Sage

completely flew over my head that she played Victoria in Twilight! I knew the name sounded familar and was very surprised. They dont look like the same person at all lol

Cekaia Miller

Yesssss one of my absolute favorites!

Madison RaeAnn Apitz

Joining the people in the comments for Hidden figures. About 3 colored women working at Nasa in the 1960s. Incredibly strong movie and based on real live events

Alexiani Gollarza

Yes please, I need them to see this movie

Alexiani Gollarza

we can ask them between the tree of them in whatever live they do next xD

Alexiani Gollarza

oh my god??? i didn't know this was coming!!! The help has to be one of my favorite movies!! it always moves me.

Daniela Robles

yeah not sure why Treasures came up. I did just watch Treasure planet here w/ Badd Medicine, so maybe that was on the brain. ha.. I have no clue.. but thanks for the catch.

Ryan Towell

Yes totally! Honestly, I thought this movie was the start of your Black History Month saga!😅

Corinne Smith

So glad you reacted to this movie. I have forgotten how much this movie hit me in the feels. Viola and Octavia were absolutely stellar. One thing I think the movie portrays so well is how kind and empathic some people can be while others are so full of hate and others are in-between. 5 answers for me.

Paul Yu (BlehBlarghBlah)

Oh my god?!?!

Micaella

Ok seriously this time, last comment: I just have to reiterate how much I appreciate how much empathy and emotional and moral openness you guys continue to exhibit. I know it doesn't sound like a big thing, but man, that stuff can sometimes be in extremely short supply, and how open-minded and caring and inclusive you guys are never fails to warm my heart. Empathy and understanding are, unfortunately, in short supply, and I appreciate very much that I can always count on coming to watch a Badd Medicine video and know I'll be getting it in spades.

Jeff K

Ok one more as I watch through this because I also forgot they dealt with the Medgar Evers assassination: it's not a GREAT movie, but it's pretty solid with a very good cast, but there's a movie called Ghosts of Mississippi that's about the trial of the man who murdered him that took place decades later, with Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg, and William H. Macy (among many others).

Jeff K

Holy shit I totally forgot Ashleigh Johnson was in this movie (the one Answer correctly points out was on Growing Pains). Answer, Oak, and Mason Quinn: she was the voice actor/motion capture performer for Ellie in the video game version of The Last of Us.

Jeff K

The movie is actually called Hidden Figures, but I agree i want them to see that movie so badly

slavicandsapphic

Everyone saying they look alike, this is the first time I’m hearing that lol they look nothing alike to me.

Raquel Perodin

Unrelated to the actual movie but I love having gotten Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard in a movie so (relatively) early in their careers together. They've both told the story about how when they were in college in New York (went to separate schools, didn't know each other), they had the same favorite coffee shop, and the barristas would always mix them up despite, again, neither of them having been famous yet or even having met because of how much they looked alike.

Jeff K

When I saw they were gonna watch this I was hesitant to rewatch with them, but I was pleasantly surprised Oak pretty much summed up the reasons why in his review. I'm a little baffled when people see this as a feel good movie, or even a comedy, like ya it had comedy, and some small wins for the main characters but the only one who got a happy ending was Skeeter, it was very bittersweet for the rest. I think it's an important story nevertheless even with the white saviour trope and the greater focus on Emma Stones character's journey and personal struggles with dating and career, and the add in of the Jessica Chastain's characters issues which drew time and attention away from "the help" and made them more side characters. I can see why Viola Davis has regrets about this role because of that, but her and Octavia Spencer both gave great performances and for 2011 it did a good job at highlighting civil rights issues during that time period in an entertaining PG13 way for the mainstream audience.

Lex

Oh 100% Umbridge. I feel like Delores Umbridge and Hilly Holbrook would be friends.

Shannon Sage

I’d say it’s umbridge so far from what I’ve seen lol. Haven’t seen the notebook tho

Raquel Perodin

One of these guys said before that the worse character in cinema history is the mom from the Notebook and all I thought of was “you haven’t met Ms. Hilly Holbrook yet” Brice Dallas Howard played that role perfectly.

Shannon Sage

I have seen this movie so many times and still some of the Viola Davis scenes make me tear up. Amazing performance!! She is in a movie called Fences (w Denzel Washington). It would be a great follow up to this!

Ronny H

I'm watching cause I love yall, although this is a great movie you just have to be in the mood for it.... grabbing my coffee ☕️

Love10 ❤️

I think it’s so important for family members to talk about their history and what they saw growing up. That way, people will understand it wasn’t that long ago. The problem is people are uncomfortable to talk about it.

Chavelle

I have been hoping that you guys could react to this!! Thank you!! Great reactions !

corina salazar

One of the best, important films ever made in my mind. I've seen this at least a dozen times and I'm a 50+ year old white dude and the acting, the story makes my freakin' eyes water a lot. Everyone was so incredible in this. Even the little girl, oh that scene breaks my heart every time. Same with the firing of Constantine. So much acting just in everyone's faces. So glad you guys watched this, I remember being surprised that Viola wasn't nominated for this, however yes Octavia won the oscar for best supporting but Jessica was also nominated for her role as best supporting as well. And I still think it's her best work. I highly recommend "Hidden Figures" about the space program but Octavia Spencer (Minnie) is in it and she's awesome great cast, Kevin Costner, Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons and you're favorite 'hunk' Glen Powell who plays John Glenn,. Obviously this is based on a true story.

Ryan Towell

I love that they highlighted how the film made them uncomfortable, but in an important way. Poor Answer seemed to be struggling to put words to thoughts but we got the message. And Oak seems to really get it. The Help isn’t one of my favorites or go tos in this genre and Oak is right, it is based off a book and pretty sanitized to get the message across is a palatable way, but the message and stories and perspectives are important to remember and take heed from. Thanks for the reaction, guys!

Lena Herbert

I think part of what makes the film so powerful is that Skeeter actually changes too--there could be an element of "white savior" in her POV in the beginning, but by then end I think she's really recognized that this book isn't hers. She's a person in a position of privilege/power using her position to amplify the voices of those who are truly telling the story.

Maisie

What a treat, easy 5

Steven Warner

Yes!! I put this in the recs chat

Chavelle

Another thing I want to say after listening to your critique - this is not meant to be “feel good.” It is meant to show hope and faith in the midst of cruelty. They show the church scenes and reference God multiple times to drive home that theme. The ending was bittersweet and also sad, because in the end, Abilene was fired and left the little girl - so it’s an appropriate ending for the lesson they were giving. She kept having hope despite it all.

Lauren

For me, I've never really seen them look that similar or have had any problem telling them a part. When they both have red hair that's when I kind of get it, maybe they could be sisters but especially in this I don't think they look very similar. It helps that one has blonde and the other red, lol.

Annie519

Hoping on the train of you guys should watch Hidden Figures!!!

slavicandsapphic

a time to kill is a MUST and Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin

Vonnie Stewart

Yes!!

ct

Yes! Octavia Spencer is a national treasure

Shanelle

Can't believe you didn't recognize the original Carrie!! Sissy Specek! I'm 28 yrs old, yall aught to be ashamed 🤣 of course I'm kidding (a little)

Ronny H

I thought they were the same person for the longest time

Ronny H

Totally that's one of my other favorite book to movie adaptations!

Corinne Smith

I watched this in high school as part of a lesson, let’s just say I cried a few times lollll but I loved it and I’m glad you guys saw it now too

Sukisuki

The Lady (in the blue dress that Hilly calls on) who you recognized in the movie at around the 1 hour and 30 minute mark (in the movie) is also the actress of Ellie in TLOU games

Jasmin

Yes was so excited for this one this month, glad you enjoyed it, you should also check out: Hidden Figures and even A time to kill (though the later is pretty heavy, so...warning) also would love to see Black Swan and Sense & Sensibilty get back in the polls, those ones are pretty good.😊

Alex Turnbull

When Answer was asking "what is in the pie?" I said "Oh, you are NOT ready" hahahaha

Danna Radilla

I’m only 20 minutes in, and I knew Oak was going to react the way he is, and I LOVE it. Powerful movie.

Lauren

Best gift after a 9 hour shift! So excited to see your guys' reactions! I think you're gonna love it

Natalie Haroun

Oh my goodness my all time fave book and movie! I've been hoping yall would watch it!!!!

Alexandria Moynihan

Really love this film even though there’s an element of the white saviour narrative here. I always love your thoughts Oak. I think the uncomfortableness is important…we have to be able to sit in the discomfort of it. The moment when you all realized what was in the pie was PRICELESS! 🤣 That scene alone got Octavia Spencer the Oscar for this film! 🥧💩

Kaley

Haha oak being mind blown about Bryce and Jessica looking the same is so funny😭

Lily

Yay, it was fun watching with you guys! It's a great movie, even though it's somewhat inaccurate, but still true. Being born and raised in South Carolina, my great-grandmother was a maid for the majority of her life, and we still have pictures of her with the white families she worked for around the family house. When she died, only 1 of the 9 kids she took care of came to her funeral, and he's still a close family friend of my grandmother. He and his daughter spend the holidays with us every year (my great-grandmothers birthday is Christmas day)!

heartb00tygrl

I love this movie! I’m so stoked you guys are watching it

Hannah 👩‍🏫

Hidden Figures needs to be next! Just in time for black history month as well!

You guys should also check out Ever After (1998), Bridget Jones Diary (2001), or I Tonya (2017). Great female lead movies 🤞❤️

Emily G

SO EXCITED! I’ve been waiting all month for this!! ❤️

Emily G

Disney does not own DreamWorks. DreamWorks is an independent company owned by Comcast. DreamWorks Animation has a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast, which allows Disney+ to stream some of their popular films and TV shows😊 So The Help was available on Disney+😊

Zoe S

Whewww been waiting for this reaction. Excited to watch it right now!!!

Peaches

Really wanted my fave Diamond Dave to be apart this watch but I'm still so excited to watch this reaction.

Dana Sow

Sooooooo good. You should watch Hidden Figures this and that movie are my two favorite black lead movies. So excited to watch this now
